Join the EU CAP Network on 12 – 13 June in Hanover, Germany. Register before 23 May.

The EU CAP Network, supported by the European Evaluation Helpdesk for the CAP, is organising the tenth Good Practice Workshop on assessing the environmental impacts of the CAP in Hanover, Germany, on 12 – 13 June. This workshop focuses on the possibilities of using big data and different data sources for assessing the environmental impacts of the CAP.
Registration is open until Friday, 23 May 2025.
Background
Supporting and improving environmental protection and climate action are key EU priorities, and the CAP is expected to play a role in reducing negative impacts and promoting positive environmental outcomes. To evaluate such impacts, high-quality data from established sources and indicators is a necessity.
Since 2016, the European Commission has focused on improving data collection and use to enhance policymaking, highlighting the potential of big data for faster feedback and evidence-based decisions (among others). Big data — data sets characterised by their volume, velocity, and variety — exceeds traditional processing capabilities but can be harnessed through technological advances and digital innovations in agriculture.
In CAP evaluations, big data from sources such as remote sensing or earth observation (EO), in situ sensors, or data linked to the Integrated Administrative and Control System (IACS) can support analysis and inform evidence-based policy decisions on environmental impacts.
Objectives of the Workshop
The overall objective of the tenth Good Practice Workshop is to showcase the possibilities of using big data and different data sources for assessing the environmental impacts of the CAP. The Workshops’ specific objectives are to:
- Build the capacity of CAP evaluation stakeholders about the usefulness of big data, including EO data, for evaluations of environmental impacts of the CAP.
- Share knowledge through the exchange of practical experiences from the use of big data for assessing environmental impacts of the CAP.
- Provide an opportunity for networking and identification of needs for further support for Managing Authorities, Paying Agencies, CAP networks and evaluators in relation to the use of big data for the assessment of environmental impacts of the CAP.
Target Audience
The Workshop will be an opportunity for Managing Authorities, CAP networks, Paying Agencies, evaluators, EU-level evaluation experts, and other evaluation stakeholders in the Member States to exchange with each other. Researchers and experts with experience in using big data and EO data will also be present to provide specialised input. The working language for all aspects of the Workshop (e.g. presentations, Q&As, interactive group work, potential side activities) will be English, and participants are expected to interact in this language.
Registration closes on Friday, 23 May 2025.
Please do not prepare travel arrangements until your participation is confirmed by the European Evaluation Helpdesk for the CAP. Take note that the European Evaluation Helpdesk for the CAP cannot cover any travel or accommodation costs and that participants are to cover all such costs.
