Since its first edition in 2006, the International Congress of Agroecology has been held in Spain (Vigo, Cordoba and Seville). The focus of this Congress is the sharing of agroecological experiences and collective responses to challenge the dominance of large markets and agribusiness. With the vision that agroecology is a collective endeavour and that its leading role must be given back to people and communities, the Congress involves actors from the social, agricultural, technical, scientific and academic sectors, as well as politicians and social movements. Embracing the inclusive principles of agroecology, the Congress keeps registration fees low to encourage broad participation, and values equally the contributions of academia and civil society. It has established itself as a significant platform that addresses crucial issues at regional, national and international levels.

The X International Congress of Agroecology will take place for the first time in Portugal, at the Polytechnic Institute of Viseu (IPV), from September 2-6, 2024. It aims to facilitate the exchange of agroecological experiences between Africa, Latin America, and Europe. The Congress has three main goals: 1. Contribute to the production, consolidation and sharing of agroecological knowledge and experiences, and promoting the transition to sustainable food systems through debate and consensus on the common elements between the world's agroecologies; 2. Continue the process of configuring agroecological strategies as integral responses (technological, socioeconomic and environmental) for a resilient food system, with the capacity to respond to the challenges of climate change, poverty and socioeconomic polarization; and 3. Give visibility to agroecologies from the Global South to the North.

To achieve these goals, it is structured around six thematic lines: (a) Agroecological practices in the dynamics of multi-territorial agroecosystems (construction, restoration, conservation); (b) Agroecological public policies in the world: consonances and dissonances; (c) New equitable and social relations based on identity (gender, ethnic, generational, cultural); (d) Climate change economic poverty and survival strategies; (e) Geographical isolation and food globality; (f) Agroecology social movements and collective emancipation (governance mechanisms).

Four types of presentations are open for submission: scientific papers, experience reports, round tables, and artistic installations. Three committees support the event: the Organising Committee (with members from various countries and professions), the Scientific Committee (comprising leading researchers in agroecology), and the Monitoring Committee (evaluating proposals for experience reports and artistic interventions). Together, they aim to emphasize the potential of agroecology globally.
