EU Soil support

Together with EU Soil Strategy and the European Soil Observatory, the EU Mission ‘a Soil deal for Europe’ is helping to build an effective framework for soil protection and restoration.

Soils are the basis for our food and they deliver vital and interconnected ecosystem functions including water regulation, hosting biodiversity, nutrient cycling, climate mitigation and adaptation benefits, supporting landscapes and cultural aspects of life.

Together with EU Soil Strategy and the European Soil Observatory, the EU Mission ‘a Soil deal for Europe’ is helping to build an effective framework for soil protection and restoration.

Healthy soils are essential for achieving climate neutrality, a clean and circular economy and stopping desertification and land degradation. They are also essential to reverse biodiversity loss, provide healthy food and safeguard human health.

EU Soil support

The EU soil strategy for 2030 provides the framework and concrete steps towards protecting and restoring soils and ensuring that they are used sustainably. As part of this, a new Soil Health Law by 2023 has been announced to ensure a level playing field and a high level of environmental and health protection.

The EU mission ‘A Soil deal for Europe’ will contribute to both global commitments, notably the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and to the European Green Deal targets on sustainable farming, climate resilience ,biodiversity and zero-pollution. It is integrated in a wide range of EU strategies and policy documents, notably the: Farm to Fork Strategy; EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030; Climate Adaptation Strategy; Zero Pollution Action Plan for air, water and soil; Forest Strategy; Long-term Vision for Rural Areas; Organic Action Plan; new EU Soil Strategy and the EU Soil Observatory.
