Physical & demographic characteristics of LAG area

Sisteronais-Buëch land is, by nature, an area of transition, located at a crossroads between Dauphiné and Provence, mediterranean and moutainous climates. It is characterized by rural, natural and agricultural features typical of mid-mountain ranges. Wild and sparsely populated (30 318 inhabitants), the territory is organized around numerous municipalities and partly covered by the Baronnies Provençales Regional Natural Park. The majority of services and businesses are concentrated in the Buëch and Durance valleys. The economy of surrounding areas is diversified but mainly driven by the farming and tourism sectors. As the only real urban zone within the LAG boundaries, Sisteron city plays a leading role due to its economic size (33% of the LAG businesses, working place for 46% of the active population) and demographic weight (7 700 inhabitants).
