Summary

The village Záhoří is part of the municipality Žim and is located in a valley which, prior to this project, often experienced floods. Flooding was caused by run-off from surrounding fields and roads which were built on the slopes of nearby hills. In the last two decades, the situation became much worse, due to climate change and more frequent weather extremes. 

In order to address this issue, the project supported the reconstruction of three countryside roads (1155m, 649m and 464m) and the construction of a small pond of almost one hectare (9693 m2). The pond is filled by the local source/spring and the newly built rain water drains along the new roads. 

Results

Runoff water in the area is now retained. The retention basin extents on 3.5 hectares around the pond.

The new infrastructure prevents floods by directing rain water into the pond.

The new roads allow for improved access to the fields and the surrounding landscape.

The ecological balance in the area has been improved as now the pond attracts birds and the meadows have greater biodiversity.
