Learning from research
Insights from research initiatives and projects showing how they could be applied to monitoring and evaluating the CAP.
This portal aims to provide insights from initiatives and research projects at the EU and Member State level concerning data infrastructures and use. It proposes a quick guide to potential use, showing how these outputs could be applied for monitoring and evaluating the CAP.
The outputs of several research projects have been organised in relation to the ten CAP Specific Objectives. Sometimes the same project output can be applied to achieve several CAP objectives.
The 10 CAP Specific Objectives

Specific Objective 1 - Ensure a fair income for farmers
Support viable farm income and resilience of the agricultural sector across the EU in order to enhance long-term food security and agricultural diversity, as well as to ensure the economic sustainability of agricultural production.

- Methodological tool to evaluate farm performance
- A methodological tool for the ex ante evaluation of CAP reforms based on FADN data
- A methodological tool for the ex post evaluation of past CAP reforms based on FADN data
- Methodology for assessing the impact of adopting organic farming on farms’ economic and environmental performance

- Methodology for mapping the distribution of small farms in Europe
- SALSA crop type maps for small farms
- Crop area and crop production estimation for small farms
- Methodology for quantification of the contribution of small farms to local food systems and food and nutritional security
- Participatory foresight analysis on the future potential role of small farms and small food businesses in food and nutrition security

Specific Objective 2 - Increase competitiveness
Enhance market orientation and increase farm competitiveness both in the short and long term, including greater focus on research, technology and digitalisation.

Specific Objective 3 - Improve farmers' position in the food chain
Supporting measures such as strengthening cooperation among farmers, increasing market transparency and ensuring effective mechanisms against unfair trading practices.

Specific Objective 4 - Climate change action
Contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation, including by reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing carbon sequestration, as well as promoting sustainable energy.

Specific Objective 5 - Environmental care
Foster sustainable development and efficient management of natural resources such as water, soil and air, including by reducing chemical dependency.

Specific Objective 6 - Preserve landscapes and biodiversity
Contribute to halting and reversing biodiversity loss, enhance ecosystem services and preserve habitats and landscapes.

Specific Objective 8 - Vibrant rural areas
Promote employment, growth, gender equality, including the participation of women in farming, social inclusion and local development in rural areas, as well as the circular bio-economy and sustainable forestry.

Specific Objective 9 - Protect food and health quality
Improve the response of EU agriculture to societal demands on food and health, including high-quality, safe and nutritious food produced in a sustainable way, to reduce food waste, as well as to improve animal welfare and combat antimicrobial resistance.

- Crop area and crop production estimation for small farms
- Methodology for quantification of the contribution of small farms to local food systems and food and nutritional security
- Participatory foresight analysis on the future potential role of small farms and small food businesses in food and nutrition security

Cross-cutting Objective - Fostering knowledge and innovation
Modernise agriculture and rural areas through fostering and sharing knowledge, innovation and digitalisation, and by encouraging their uptake by farmers through improved access to research, innovation, knowledge exchange and training.
