Objectives
Initiative of a group of 5 farmers wishing to diversify their income on a new arboreal production, starting from the observation that the French production of hazelnuts was deficient and non-existent in Normandy. The objective of the project is to study the feasibility of this culture. A partnership was established with the Unicoque cooperative, processing almost all French hazelnut production. This cooperative will supervise field trials based on a selection of varieties adapted to the Norman pedoclimatic context. The outlets would be local and a partnership with a confectionery manufacturer based near Rouen will be studied

The GIEE Noiset'Eure started its reflections on the feasibility of growing hazelnuts in the department of Eure by setting up 4 orchards within 4 farms. The purpose of planting these orchards is to obtain data allowing the feasibility, in this new production area, to be able to give clear answers to new planters on the advisability of planting and developing a orchard of hazelnut trees. The data expected from this trial concerns the growth and development of trees as well as the productivity of different varieties, in order to best explain the results obtained, data concerning the climatology and cultural practices of farmers were also collected. This experiment is based on the behavioral observation of several small trial orchards composed of the same varietal distribution and the same type of establishment. The results of observations, measurements and counts include a growth control at the end of 2017, a growth control at the end of 2018, the weighing of the 2019 hazelnut crops, the climatological data for 2019 and the record of the phenological stages. The first lessons from these tests are as follows: it is possible to grow hazelnut trees in the Eure - This crop will still need to be irrigated in order to meet these needs during vegetation - The productivity of an orchard showed from the 3rd leaf that it was possible to obtain very correct results with certain varieties - Concerning diseases, the hazelnut tree is not very sensitive except to Gléosporioses and Anthracnoses - With regard to pests, the production of hazelnut trees will gradually show stronger pressure from the 3 main pests (Balanin, Phytopte and Bedbugs). The tests must be continued and the observations of 2020 must integrate these aspects.
