Objectives

AgriAdapt aims to help farmers to adapt the management of their farms to the new conditions expected due to climate change trends, on their specific sites. Thus the project works on the design and implementation of adaptation measures at farm level, seeking to make farms more resilient to the new challenges posed by climate change, while also considering potential and complementary environmental benefits, such as ecosystem services. Furthermore the project includes actions to raise awareness amongst farmers and to share best practices. It covers the most important EU farming systems (livestock, arable land and permanent crops) and the four climatic regions (Atlantic, Continental, Southern and Nordic).

Additional information

One of the current outcomes of the project is the baseline report, informing about the main risks but also potential opportunities posed by climate change in the different countries, so that farmers can become aware about what the future may bring for agriculture in their area. In the case of France, for example, the scenario will be more favourable in the North of the country than in the South for the current types of agricultural production. Thus, while drought and heat will threaten arable crops or vineyards in Southern France, warmer temperatures will increase yields of those in the North, mainly due to the longer and more favourable growing season (for example with less risk of frost). Furthermore, in the case of livestock feed, like fodder crops and grasslands, there might be potential for winter grazing. And due to these favourable conditions, it will be possible to also expand the cultivated area, as more places will reach favourable conditions for all these crops. However, this trend does not apply to some fruits (e.g. apple), which are very sensitive to extreme weather events, especially those out of season. And what about Southern France? In most of the cases, the future for agriculture in this region will include new crops and/or varieties replacing those that will no longer be profitable under the changing climatic conditions.
