Optimisation of nutrient budget in agriculture

Horizon Europe project NutriBudget aims to support sustainable intensification of agriculture to meet the demands of optimising yields

In accordance with the European Commission’s Green Deal objectives to reduce nutrient losses by 50% and fertiliser use by 20% by 2030, the Horizon Europe project NutriBudget aims to support sustainable intensification of agriculture to meet the demands of optimising yields. Initiated in September 2022, the project will explore various agronomic mitigation measures and the modelling of the impact of these measures on the environment.

To accomplish these targets, NutriBudget will develop and implement a pioneering integrated nutrient management platform, called NutriPlatform. The NutriPlatform will operate as a decision-support tool for farmers, advisers, European policy makers and regional authorities. It will be tested and used by at least 40 000 farmers across Europe.

“We are currently working on the creation of a mitigation measure catalogue. For this, in the last 2-3 weeks, we conducted our first national co-creation workshops with stakeholders in 5 pilot regions (Atlantic, Boreal, continental nutrient deficit, continental nutrient surplus and Mediterranean regions), with aim to receive their input on measures of interest to be added in the catalogue” explains Ivona Sigurnjak, scientific coordinator from Ghent University. The partners of the project also plan to organise an international co-creation workshop in September in Brussels as a part of the ESNI conference (European Sustainable Nutrient Initiative).
