Mountains are significant from an EU policy perspective because they play a crucial role in shaping Europe’s climate, providing habitats for diverse flora and fauna, as well as offering a unique range of tourism and recreation opportunities. The EU’s policy framework for mountain areas is, therefore, the subject of a new Policy Insights article on our website.

EU mountain areas benefit from the CAP’s financial support promoting sustainable practices and contributing to social cohesion. Without this CAP support, these regions could face even greater challenges in maintaining viable agricultural activities, supporting thriving populations and preserving their unique cultural landscapes.

The new Policy Insights provides an overview of mountain farming in Europe and reviews the range of CAP support available. It concludes by highlighting how the EU CAP Network is helping coordinate European expertise on strengthening the competitiveness and resilience of mountain areas through a Focus Group to be launched in November 2023.
