Physical & demographic characteristics of LAG area
The Leader Fell Lapland LAG area is located in northwestern Finnish Lapland and includes the municipalities of Enontekiö, Kittilä, Kolari, and Muonio. The entire area lies north of the Arctic Circle, making it one of the northernmost LAG areas in the European Union.
Tunturi-Lappi is defined by vast wilderness, Arctic fells, forests, and remote rural villages. It is characterized by a subarctic climate, long distances, and limited population density—among the lowest in Finland. Many smaller communities face depopulation and aging demographics, while tourism hubs such as Levi and Ylläs bring seasonal vitality and growth.
Traditional livelihoods such as reindeer herding and local crafts remain present, and tourism has become a major economic driver. Despite geographic and infrastructural challenges, the region has strong cultural identity and natural re
Assets & land use of the LAG area
The Fell Lapland LAG area consists of vast Arctic landscapes: fells, forests, wetlands, rivers, and lakes. Large areas are protected, including Pallas–Yllästunturi National Park. Key land uses include nature tourism, reindeer herding, and small-scale agriculture. Settlements are scattered, with tourism hubs like Levi and Ylläs being the most populated. Tourism infrastructure is a major land user. Mining also plays a role, especially in Kittilä, home to Finland’s largest gold mine. While mining brings economic value, it also requires environmental responsibility. The region’s key assets include its unspoiled nature, cultural heritage, and strong community identity. Sustainable land use is essential to balance traditional livelihoods, tourism, mining, and environmental protection.
