Join us at the CODECS Science-Policy Workshop to explore how digital tools are reshaping governance, shifting power among actors, and changing the way we farm.
Digitalisation is no longer a future trend—it's a present reality that is reshaping agriculture in profound ways. From transforming governance systems to altering power dynamics among stakeholders and shifting everyday farming practices, digital tools are driving fundamental change across the sector.
The CODECS Science-Policy Workshop will explore these changes using the Social-Ecological Systems (SES) framework, offering a structured lens to understand the complex and interrelated impacts of digitalisation on agriculture.
This workshop will be informed by insights from the 2024 CODECS Report on EU Policy Environments, which examines:
- Key policy drivers, barriers, and enablers for digital adoption in agriculture
- Priority focus areas including digital literacy, infrastructure, data governance, and policy integration
A highlight of the session will be a presentation from the BEATLES project, which explores the transition to Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) and the integration of smart agricultural technologies. It will draw on findings from the AEIDL policy brief, which analyses sustainability practices within EU policies, and examine the alignment between:
- The CAP Strategic Plan
- The EU Digitalisation Strategy
- The three core principles of CSA: productivity, climate adaptation, and mitigation
Participants will engage in expert presentations and hands-on breakout sessions to map the impacts of digitalisation on governance, actors, resource units, and farming systems. The outcomes will support evidence-based policymaking and help pave the way for a more resilient and digitally empowered agricultural sector.
The workshop will open with a welcome and an overview of the EU policy landscape for digitalisation in agriculture. Key presentations will follow, sharing findings from recent research and projects, including the CODECS and BEATLES initiatives. These talks will set the stage for a deeper understanding of how current policy frameworks support—or hinder—the uptake of digital solutions in farming.
After a short coffee break, participants will take part in an interactive workshop session focused on mapping the real-world impacts of digitalisation across various agricultural dimensions. This participatory segment will provide space for dialogue, reflection, and knowledge exchange. The session will conclude with a collective discussion and final remarks, summarising key takeaways and outlining potential policy directions.
