Context

The potato blight disease Phytophthora Infestans poses a major challenge for Dutch potato growers. Robust varieties, through disease resistance or earliness, ensure greater yield security for organic growers and significantly reduce pesticide use in conventional cultivation. To ensure the successful and sustainable introduction of robust varieties, we are involving the entire supply chain in this project, from grower to supermarket. The supply chain is affiliated through the 2022-2026 Potato Covenant, transition to robust organic potato varieties.

Objectives

The number of robust potato varieties grows to 35 in 2024, with the goal of successfully integrating them into the (organic) potato chain for stable, profitable and sustainable cultivation. These varieties support a sustainable earnings model for Dutch (organic) arable farming. This is achieved through chain-wide agreements and the collection and distribution of information about available varieties. Through education, responsible and sustainable use is stimulated, inspiring new growers to increase the acreage of robust varieties in both organic and conventional cultivation.

Objectives

Het aantal robuuste aardappelrassen groeit naar 35 in 2024, met als doel deze succesvol te integreren in de (biologische) aardappelketen voor een stabiele, rendabele en duurzame teelt. Deze rassen ondersteunen een duurzaam verdienmodel voor de Nederlandse (biologische) akkerbouw. Dit wordt gerealiseerd door ketenbrede afspraken en het verzamelen en verspreiden van informatie over beschikbare rassen. Via voorlichting wordt verantwoord en duurzaam gebruik gestimuleerd, wat nieuwe telers inspireert om het areaal robuuste rassen in zowel biologische als gangbare teelt te vergroten.

Activities

The project's goal is a complete transition to robust varieties in the organic potato sector. Bionext facilitates this process in collaboration with supply chain partners, advisors, and researchers by establishing demonstration fields, developing and disseminating information on resistance management, and monitoring supply chain agreements.

Activities

Het doel van het project  is een volledige transitie naar robuuste rassen in de biologische aardappelsector. Bionext faciliteert dit proces in samenwerking met ketenpartijen, adviseurs en onderzoekers, middels de aanleg van demovelden, het ontwikkelen en verspreiden van informatie over resistentiemanagement en het monitoren van ketenafspraken.

1 Practice Abstracts

Three demonstration fields were established annually, and meetings were organized where over 100 people were introduced to (new) robust potato varieties. Results of phytophthora monitoring in the demonstration fields and progress on the robust potato covenant were presented annually. Fact sheets for resistance management were developed, along with a brochure about robust varieties. The number of robust varieties on the list has grown from 25 (2022) to 38 (2024). The area of ​​robust varieties has increased from 2,000 ha (2022) to approximately 3,400 ha (2024). During the project, the objectives for a transition to 100% robust varieties in the organic sector were almost achieved. Over 90% of seed and table potato production is now robust. Supermarkets have fully transitioned to robust organic table potatoes; only foreign trade and processing are not yet fully robust. Cooking and baking trials were organized annually during the project. Here, the characteristics of the robust varieties – cooking type, table/chips/fries, and color – are on display. Growers and consumers also taste-tested during a cooking event with a professional chef. Synergies also emerged during the project between the conventional and organic potato sectors through the Phytophthora Task Force, led by BO-Akkerbouw.

Er zijn jaarlijks drie demovelden aangelegd en bijeenkomsten georganiseerd waar ieder jaar ruim 100 personen kennis hebben gemaakt met (nieuwe) robuuste aardappelrassen. Er zijn jaarlijks resultaten gepresenteerd van de phytophthora monitoring op de demovelden, en de voortgang van het convenant robuuste aardappelen. Er zijn factsheets ontwikkeld voor resistentiemanagement, en een brochure over de robuuste rassen. Het aantal robuuste rassen is gegroeid van 25(2022) naar 38 (2024) rassen op de lijst. Het areaal robuuste rassen is gegroeid van 2000 ha (2022) naar ongeveer 3400 ha (2024).  Tijdens het project zijn de doelstellingen voor een transitie naar 100% robuuste rassen in de biologische sector bijna gehaald. Ruim 90% poot- en consumptie teelt is nu robuust. Supermarketen zijn volledig over naar robuuste biologische consumptieaardappelen, alleen de buitenlandse handel en de verwerking zijn nog niet volledig robuust. Tijdens het project zijn jaarlijks kook- en bakproeven georganiseerd. Hier zijn de eigenschappen van de robuuste rassen – kooktype, tafel/chips/friet, en kleur – ten toon gespreid. Telers en consumenten hebben ook een smaaktest gedaan tijdens een kookevenement met een professionele chef. Ook zijn er tijdens het project synergiën ontstaan tussen de gangbare en biologische aardappelsector in de vorm van de taskforce Phytophthora, geleid door BO-Akkerbouw.
