Objectives
In the a context of limited availability of arable land and increasing demand for organic and local products, this project investigates the feasibility of mixed cropping of organic vegetables and young apricot as well as almond trees and 3 years old apricot orchard. The aims of this project include :
-the acquisition of reference in production of mixed cropping of vegetables and fruit trees
-Evaluation of production method
-Evaluation of the impact of vegetables crops on soil fertility, biodiversity, yield, and labour requirement
-organisation of farmers workshop and groups meetings
Objectives
Dans un contexte foncier tendu et une demande croissante de produits bio et locaux diversifiés, le projet porte sur l'étude de la faisabilité de cultures maraîchères en verger d'abricotiers de plantation récente et de plus de 3 ans ainsi qu'en verger d'amandier biologique récent. Les objectifs seront :
-D'acquérir des références sur le potentiel de production de cultures maraîchères et fruitières en intercalées
-d'évaluer des itinéraires techniques
-D'étudier l'impact des cultures maraîchères sur la fertilité du sol, la biodiversité, le rendement et le temps de travail
-D'animer un groupe d'échanges de maraîchers agroforestiers
Activities
In order to study the mixed cropping of vegetables and fruit trees, trial plots will be used, including :
-The creation of a young apricot orchard and almond tree mixed with vegetables crops on the experimental station of Sud Expé Centrex (Toreilles)
-A 3 -yearold apricot orchard with vegetables crops associated on the site of the EPLEFPA Perpignan Roussillon (Théza)
For each plot, potential benefit on fertility, biodiversity and economic viability will be monitored. Concurrently, an inventory of the different systems currently used on farms will be made.
Activities
Afin d'étudier l'association de cultures maraîchères et fruitières, des parcelles expérimentales seront mis en place :
-La création d'un jeune verger d'abricotiers et d'amandiers associé à des cultures maraîchères sur le site de Sud Expé CENTREX (Toreilles)
-Un verger de 3 ans d'abricotiers avec association de cultures maraîchères sur l'exploitation de l'EPLEFPA Perpignan Roussillon (Théza)
Des suivis économiques, de fertilité des sols et de biodiversité seront réalisés sur ces parcelles.En parallèle de ces parcelles, les différents systèmes retrouvés chez les producteurs seront recensés dans le cadre du projet.

2 Practice Abstracts
The 3 years old apricot orchard field trial will :
-compare yield and crop aspects in a 3 year-old-apricot orchard compared to a younger orchard of the station of Sud Expé centrex
-Study the evolution of the number of intervention to control pests and weeds in plots.
The protocol used on the Sud expé CENTREX plot will be the same as that of the Théza plot to allow for comparison of the crops. High school students will be able to contribute to the creation and monitoring of the plot throughout the length of the experiment.
L’objectif de la parcelle experimentale de verger d’abricotier de plus de 3 ans sera :
- De comparer le rendement et le comportement des cultures (maraîchères et fruitières) dans un verger âgé de 3 ans par rapport au jeune verger de la station expérimentale de Sud Expé CENTREX
- D’étudier l’évolution du nombre d’interventions physiques (type intercep) et phytosanitaire sur la parcelle
Le protocole défini pour la parcelle de Sud Expé CENTREX sera le même que pour la parcelle de Théza afin de pouvoir comparer les mêmes espèces. Les étudiants du lycée pourront participer à la mise en place de la parcelle et réaliser des suivis tout au long des expérimentations.
The aim of the project studying recently-planted apricot orchards and almonds is to:
- Acquire references on the production potential of vegetables planted on the row or between rows. The species will be chosen based either on their ability to limit weed development due to high soil coverage or on their capacity to provide a natural amendment (e.g. crop residus used as green manure).
- Acquire references on the production potential of a newly planted apricot orchard compared to that of a 3-year-old orchard as well as on the production potential of a recently planted almond orchard in a mixed cropping system with vegetable crop.
- Assess the economic viability of different management strategies (planting dates, mulching, tillage)
- Study the impact of vegetable crops on fruit tree production, soil structure, pest populations and weed control.
This project will provide technical and economical data on the association of fruit trees and vegetable cropping systems in Mediterranean conditions.
L'objectif du projet en station d'expérimentation sur verger nouvellement planté est : D’acquérir des références sur le potentiel de production de plusieurs espèces maraichères intercalées sur le rang ou entre rang de verger d’abricotiers et d’amandiers. Les espèces seront choisies pour leur capacité à limiter l’enherbement ou à apporter un amendement naturel au verger (résidu de culture enterré comme engrais vert).
- D’acquérir des références sur le potentiel de production d’un jeune verger d’abricots par rapport à un verger de 3 ans ainsi que sur le potentiel de production d’une plantation d’amandiers jeunes associés à des cultures maraîchères.
- D’évaluer des itinéraires techniques économiquement viables pour ce système (créneaux de plantations, paillage, travail du sol)
- D’étudier l’impact des cultures légumières sur la production des arbres fruitiers, la structure du sol, les populations de ravageurs et la maîtrise de l’enherbement
La finalité du projet permettra d’avoir des références technico-économiques sur l’association d’espèces fruitières et maraîchères en condition méditerranéenne.
