Objectives
The general objective of the project is to test the feasibility, in terms of economic sustainability, of the FederBio “High Welfare” standard to beef cattle and egg poultry farms, which are kind of farms relevant for the regional organic sector.
The specific objectives are:
- to protect the environment,
- to increase and preserve animal welfare,
- to improve the quality and safety of production,
- to increase the integration of farms within the agri-food value chain.
Activities
1) ACTION REALIZATION OF COOPERATION
2) SPECIFIC ACTIONS RELATED TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PLAN:
- 1. Testing and analysis of the technical and economic sustainability of the FederBio High Welfare standard
- 2. Definition of guidelines for proper organic nutrition
- 3. Monitoring and reporting of the impacts of the organic production method
- 4. Verticalization of the FIP4 platform to the relevant supply chain contexts of FIP4Beef and FIP4Poultry

ACTION 4 - Verticalisation of the FIP4 platform to the relevant supply chain contexts FIP4Beef and FIP4Poultry
Within the framework of this action, the FIP4Poultry and FIP4Beef platforms were developed for the organic meat and egg poultry and beef supply chains.
The platform is able to record, at the time of each transaction along the supply chain, the quantities of marketed product starting from those actually present on the farm and the mass balance of the products involved in the supply chain (raw materials, semi-finished products, finished products) thanks to the connection with the information systems of the companies operating in the supply chain.
The platform is also able to manage the detection of animal welfare indicators according to the FederBio "High Welfare" standard through the implementation of the Check Lists developed in action 1.
The activities were implemented by the company Attivi Digitali in synergy with the leading companies (Bovinitaly, Fileni and Tedaldi) and included an initial analysis of the data flows, which resulted in a customisation of the platform and integration with those used by the supply chains and companies participating in the project. Finally, through a prototype test phase, the operational test of the FIP4Beef and FIP4Poultry platforms was developed.
ACTION 3 - Defining a system for monitoring and returning the impacts of the organic production method on the environment and animal welfare
Under this action, a system for monitoring and restitution of the impacts of the organic production method on the environment and animal welfare was defined to ensure the sustainability and social justifiability of organic livestock farming.
In developing this monitoring system, 2 types of indicators were identified: 1. behavioural (to ensure that animals can express their ethology) 2. absence of lesions (plumage, plantar, sternal)
Parallel to the behavioural surveys, a series of environmental indicators (Energy Used) were created and evaluated to determine the sustainability of the actions taken.
The environmental indicators were analysed using an approach based on the LCA methodology, which allows the entire life cycle of the animal to be evaluated, starting with the production of feed.
At the end of the development and evaluation of the environmental and welfare indicators, easy-to-understand information proposals were developed that can be used by end consumers. In concert with the activities of action 4, the data collected can be made usable through the development of FIP4Poultry with accessibility through QR codes on the labels of finished products.
ACTION 2 - Definition of guidelines for proper organic feeding
As part of this action, guidelines were drawn up for correct organic feeding in the cattle (meat), laying hen and broiler sectors.
The activity was carried out through an initial bibliographic research on the good practices of the prevailing types of organic farms in Italy for the animal species considered. Subsequently, thanks to an exchange of information between experts, guidelines were drawn up in relation to the specifics of the sectors and the farms involved. The elements linked to correct feeding were included as indices in the checklists produced in action 1 and consequently the information collected was recorded on the FIP4Poultry and FIP4Beef platforms covered by action 4.
ACTION 1 - Experimentation of the FederBio High Welfare Standard for animal welfare
In the framework of this action the application of the FederBio High Welfare Standard for animal welfare was tested in the sectors involved, involving bovine and poultry species.
The activity envisaged the definition of score checklists to verify compliance with the standard on the farms involved. Through the performance of 2 audits for each GO partner breeder it was possible to concretely highlight the level of deviation between the farm reality and the objectives required by the FederBio High Welfare Standard thanks to the score resulting from the checklist. The actions to be implemented to raise the level of welfare normally applied in relation to the main points of the FederBio High Welfare Standard were then shared with the farmer. Finally, a Farm Improvement Plan was prepared.
