Development of a prototype cross-laminated timber panel with local timber to improve the sustainability of building construction

Objectives
The objective of the project is to fabricate at least one type of CLT prototype panel. CLT fabrication will increase the competitiveness of the sector, particularly against European competitors. It will diversify production (since sawn timber is mostly used in packaging), and innovate the fabrication of locally sourced timber. CLT fabrication will generate demand for quality sawn timber, thus positively impacting all links of the forest to industry chain. Fabrication of the panel is the first step towards starting a high-capacity manufacturing facility.
Objectives
El objetivo del proyecto es la fabricación de al menos un tipo de panel prototipo de madera contralaminada. La fabricación de CLT permitirá incrementar la competitividad del sector, especialmente frente a los competidores europeos, diversificar la producción, ya que esencialmente la madera aserrada se dedica a embalaje, e innovar fabricando con madera local. El CLT generará demanda de madera aserrada de calidad generando efectos positivos en todos los eslabones de la cadena bosque-industria. La elaboración del prototipo será el primer paso para poner en marcha una fábrica de alta capacidad productiva.
Activities
The weaknesses are the cost of raw material, the availability of material and the relatively low yield of local wood. The strengths are the high strength of the material and the increase in demand, which is already apparent and is expected to increase even more in the near future. Therefore, further research is recommended to improve the weaknesses identified, for example through the use of automatic grading systems that identify the best structural timber for each project, or the improvement of the drying processes.
Activities
Los puntos débiles son el coste de la materia prima, la disponibilidad de material y el relativo bajo rendimiento de la madera local. Los puntos fuertes son la buena calidad resistente del material y el incremento de la demanda que ya se aprecia y se prevé aún mayor en un futuro inmediato. Por lo tanto, se recomienda seguir investigando para mejorar los puntos débiles detectados. Algunos de ellos son los sistemas de clasificación automática de madera estructural que mejor se adapten al proyecto o la mejora de los procesos de secado.
Kontext
The project consists of the fabrication of a prototype cross-laminated timber (CLT) panel with timber from Catalan pines, which complies with the upcoming European regulations and is competitive with the panels that are already being fabricated in central European countries. One key point in the development of the project will be the selection of the adhesive that glues the layers together. Adhesives must always comply with the specifications of the European regulations for structural timber.
