Activities

The development of the project is focused on the collection and analysis of animal activity data. To this end, several activities will be carried out. Work will be done on evaluating the activity and circadian rhythms of lambs during the fattening period. This will be measured at various different livestock densities in order to establish a relationship between the number of lambs per square meter and changes in activity and circadian rhythms. It is very important that this is done simultaneously on three different farms to give robustness to the results obtained. In addition, all data related to diseases that may affect the animals during the study will be taken into account. In addition, an analysis will be carried out of the times that lambs spend next to feeders and drinkers, thus allowing us to understand the feeding and drinking patterns of lambs during the fattening period. All this data, together with the disease data, will allow us to have a complete view of the behavior of lambs during the fattening phase and their relationship with diseases. Since these data may be affected by environmental conditions, data collection should be carried out several times throughout the year to correctly reflect the variations that may occur. All these activities will ultimately allow us to create recommendations based on scientific observations on stocking density and the availability of drinkers and feeders to obtain the highest standards of welfare and reduce the presence of diseases in our feedlots.

1 Practice Abstracts

Various factors affect the fattening lambs welfare, physical comfort, i.e. the space that an animal needs to avoid stress problems for this reason, is one of the main ones. This is known as stocking density and there are recommendations very variable and they can range from 0.3m2/lamb to 1.2m2/lamb. However, these recommendations are not supported by scientific studies carried out under commercial conditions. For this reason, the project aims to establish recommendations adapted to fattening lambs with a focus on precision livestock farming.
