Kontext

Sweet potato consumption has skyrocketed in recent years. It's often imported from the US, which results in significant (and unnecessary) CO2 emissions. Research conducted in recent years has shown that sweet potato cultivation is quite feasible in the Netherlands.

Objectives

The project aimed to professionalize and scale up sweet potato cultivation in the Netherlands. Within two years, competitive and sustainable cultivation on sandy and clay soils had to be made possible, including knowledge sharing and supply chain development. This contributes to:

  • Reduction of CO₂ emissions through fewer imports.
  • A new source of income for Dutch agriculture.

Objectives

Het project had als doel om de teelt van zoete aardappel (bataat) in Nederland te professionaliseren en op te schalen. Binnen twee jaar moest een prijstechnisch concurrerende en duurzame teelt op zand- en kleigronden mogelijk worden gemaakt, inclusief kennisdeling en ketenontwikkeling. Dit draagt bij aan:  Vermindering van CO₂-uitstoot door minder import.  Nieuwe inkomstenbron voor Nederlandse landbouw.

Activities

The sweet potato is a tropical crop that originally does not grow easily in the Netherlands. By making smart use of films, innovative cultivation techniques and extensive knowledge of breeding, we see that more was possible than was thought possible until a few years ago. Moreover, we have achieved various things in recent years with an active EIP group, which also makes it increasingly possible from a cost perspective. The developments of the existing EIP group started on the sandy soils in the eastern part of Brabant and are mainly aimed at the processing industry.

Activities

De zoete aardappel is een tropisch gewas wat oorspronkelijk niet gemakkelijk in Nederland groeit. Door slim gebruik te maken van folies, innovatieve teelttechnieken en vergaande kennis inzake veredeling zien we dat er meer mogelijk was dan tot enkele jaren geleden voor mogelijk werd gehouden. Bovendien hebben we met een actieve EIP-groep de afgelopen jaren verschillende zaken gerealiseerd, waardoor het ook kostentechnisch steeds beter mogelijk wordt. De ontwikkelingen van de bestaande EIP-groep zijn gestart op de zandgronden in het oostelijk deel van Brabant en zijn voornamelijk gericht op de verwerkende industrie.

1 Practice Abstracts

The key results. The project focused on three pillars:

1. Cultivation optimisation

  • Variety trials: Research into 11 varieties; Kenyan varieties show higher dry matter content but smaller tubers. 
  • Fertilisation & preceding crops: Sugar beet as a preceding crop yielded better results; nitrogen stages tested.
  • Planting material: Slips cheaper and better than press pots; mechanisation of slip planting developed.
  • Weed control: Biofilm helps, but mechanical control remains difficult.
  • Storage: Curing and storage at 12°C; ULO technique being investigated.

2. Mechanisation

  • Development of specialised planting and harvesting machines.
  • Trials with harvesting machines (including 4-row bunker harvester).
  • Optimisation of storage, washing and sorting methods; automation still expensive.

3. Chain positioning

  • Market research: Consumer research by HZ University; recommendations: promotion, collaboration with chefs, HelloFresh, local shops.
  • Sales channels: Rechtstreex, local supermarkets, wholesalers, restaurants, cooperatives, Potatonext (Albert Heijn).
  • Challenges: High cost price, small volumes, inefficiency among small-scale buyers.
  • Media attention: Articles, TV/radio, social media, promotional films. Conclusions  Dutch sweet potatoes have potential, but price and efficiency are the biggest challenges.

  • Mechanisation and chain development are crucial for profitability.
  • Further improvement in quality, shelf life and automation is needed. 
  • Sales through large parties such as Potatonext offer the most prospects.

De belangrijkste resultaten Het project richtte zich op drie pijlers:

1. Teeltoptimalisatie

  • Rassenproeven: Onderzoek naar 11 rassen; Keniaanse rassen tonen hoger droge stofgehalte, maar kleinere knollen. 
  • Bemesting & Voorvruchten: Suikerbiet als voorvrucht gaf betere opbrengst; stikstoftrappen getest.
  • Plantmateriaal: Slips goedkoper en beter dan perspotjes; mechanisatie van slipplanting ontwikkeld.
  • Onkruidbestrijding: Biofolie helpt, maar mechanische bestrijding blijft lastig.
  • Bewaring: Cureren en opslag bij 12°C; ULO-techniek wordt onderzocht.

    2. Mechanisatie
  • Ontwikkeling van gespecialiseerde plantmachines en rooimachines.
  • Proeven met oogstmachines (o.a. 4-rijige bunkerrooier).
  • Optimalisatie van inschuur-, was- en sorteermethoden; automatisering nog kostbaar.

    3. Ketenpositionering
  • Marktonderzoek: Consumentenonderzoek door HZ University; aanbevelingen: promotie, samenwerking met chefs, HelloFresh, lokale winkels.
  • Afzetkanalen: Rechtstreex, lokale supermarkten, groothandels, restaurants, coöperaties, Potatonext (Albert Heijn).
  • Uitdagingen: Hoge kostprijs, kleine volumes, inefficiëntie bij kleinschalige afnemers.
  • Media-aandacht: Artikelen, tv/radio, social media, promotiefilms. Conclusies  Nederlandse zoete bataat heeft potentie, maar prijs en efficiëntie zijn grootste uitdagingen.
