22 May is International Day for Biodiversity 2023

It's not too late to build back biodiversity

The United Nations General Assembly chose the 22 May, the anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity, as the International Day for Biodiversity. This international convention aims to protect biological diversity, the sustainable use of natural resources and the protection of genetic resources. The year 2023 marks the 30th anniversary of the entry into force of this Convention.

The theme for the International Day for Biodiversity 2023 is “From Agreement to Action: Build Back Biodiversity”. This theme builds on the results of COP 15 and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (2022) which sets out an ambitious pathway to reach the global vision of a world living in harmony with nature by 2050. For this year’s campaign, 22 Actions for Biodiversity have been drawn up, including actions for individuals, businesses and cities.

International Day for Biodiversity 2023

Biodiversity encompasses all animal and plant species living on earth (and in the seas). The biosphere is home to between 5 and 30 million species. Approximately 1.7 million animal species have been recorded, and every year new species are recorded. Unfortunately, many species are also disappearing, often due to the actions of human society. So the International Day for Biodiversity aims to raise awareness, and organisations around the world mark this day to promote initiatives set up to protect biodiversity. It is a chance to highlight innovative solutions to the biodiversity crisis and bring them to the forefront of global conversations on sustainable development.
