Objectives

Because of water pollution, herbicides are on the spot, and farmers are looking for new ways of working without herbicides. The project “Zero herbicides in Mediterranean perennial crops”  aims to evaluate and promote an innovative weed management system, using under row cover crops. Cover crops naturally protect the soil, needs less interventions and therefore save time and money for farmers. 

Objectives

Les agriculteurs sont à la recherche de nouvelles solutions techniques alternatives aux herbicides pour l'entretien des sols. Le projet "Zéro Herbicides en cultures pérennes méditerranéennes" a pour objectif de tester et d'évaluer des itinéraires innovants à base d'enherbement sous le rang. L'enherbement protège le sol, nécessite moins d'interventions et permet d'économiser du temps et de l'argent.

Activities

8 experimental fields were set in order to evaluate the agronomic impact of the cover crop on grapevines or trees, and to screen cover crop species that could fit for a under row setting. In addition, 2 demonstration sites are planned to promote the results to farmers.

8 sites expérimentaux ont été mis en place pour évaluer les impacts agronomiques sur la vigne et les vergers, et rechercher les espèces d'enherbement les plus intéressantes pour une installation sous le rang. 2 sites de démonstration sont prévus pour promouvoir les résultats aux agriculteurs.

1 Practice Abstracts

The project “Zero herbicides in Mediterranean perennial crops” aims to evaluate and promote innovative weed management techniques without herbicides in perennial crops, as vineyards and orchards. The project is focused on an innovative weed management system, using under row cover crops instead of tillage or herbicides. Cover crops naturally protect the soil, needs less interventions and therefore save time and money for farmers. The expected results of the project will focused on :
- evaluation of agronomic impacts of under-row cover crops on grapevine or trees
- feasability of mecanisation of cover crop management (under-row cover crop mowing)
- economic evaluation of the innovative system

Les résultats attendus permettront de proposer de nouveaux itinéraires de gestion des adventices "Zéro Herbicides", pour les viticulteurs et arboricuteurs situés en zones sensibles (captages d'eau potable prioritaires, parcelles à proximité des cours d'eau ou d'habitation, agriculture biologique). Ces itinéraires innovants sont basés sur la gestion d'un enherbement sous le rang de plantation. L'enherbement protège les sols, la biodiversité. L'entretien est plus souple.
Les résultats attendus du projet sont sur 3 points :
- l'impact agronomique de cette technique (productivité de la vigne ou des arbres)
- la faisabilité technique (mécanisation de l'entretien de l'enherbement)
- les aspects économiques (coût de la technique)
