Objectives
Beeswax is a high value agricultural product. Beekeepers per year need 0.5 kg fresh Beeswax per colony. Today most Beeswax is contaminated with agrochemicals. There is a lack of quality Beeswax and no good method is available for routine purification of Beeswax from chemicals. Scientific literature shows that Beeswax can be purified from chemicals. The objective of this project is to develop and scale-up a method for producing clean, top quality Beeswax free of chemical residues. The beekeepers provide Beeswax and then evaluate the purified Beeswax to show the positive effect on bees, increased honey production and reduced colony losses.
Objectives
Ceara de albine este un produs agricol valoros. Apicultorii au nevoie de 0,5 kg ceara proaspata pe an. Majoritatea cerii este contaminata cu produse agrochimice. Exista o criza a cerii de calitate ridicata si nu exista o metoda de rutina de purificare a acesteia. Literatura stiintifica arata ca ceara poate fi purificata de chimicale. Prin acest proiect se va dezvolta o metoda de purificare la scara larga pentru a produce o ceara superioara, libera de reziduuri chimice. Apicultorii vor colecta ceara si vor evalua ceara purificata pentru a arata efectele pozitive asupra albinelor, a mierii si a supravietuirii stupinei.
Activities
1. Operational group management. 2 Collection of beeswax from beekeepers for laboratory testing. 3 Development of analytical methodology for testing beeswax and the extraction methodology of different chemical residues from beeswax. 4 Development and implementation of industrial scale purification process of beeswax
5 Collection of industrial scale quantity of beeswax that is purified via the developed process and testing its purity from residues after purification. 6 Distribution of the purified beeswax in beehives and recording the effects of using the clean beeswax. 7 Analysis of the effects promoted by the use of clean beeswax in beehives and results dissemination

2 Practice Abstracts
In the last decades the quality of beeswax has dropped because of the use of agrochemicals in agriculture and chemical treatments in beekeeping. These toxic compounds accumulate in beeswax. As a consequence a deficit was created in the quality of beeswax and has created a dependency on the need to import low quality and cheap beeswax.
Benefits for farmers/beekeepers:
a) Clean beeswax will be produced locally on the Romanian market at an appropriate price
b) Reduction in beehives loss due to the improvement of bees health
c) Reduction in contamination of honey and other bee products
d) The possibility of developing organic beekeeping
e) The increased number of available pollinators will bring benefits to agriculture on a large scale
f) Tests for determining the quality of beeswax will become available based on the methodology that will be developed in the Bucharest University labs
g) Dissemination of results will be done in specialty publications and through participation in beekeeping conferences
Benefits for researchers:
a) Methodology developed in this project could be adapted for other areas like fish oil refinery and other extraction procedures for fats and oils.
b) Methods of analysing the compounds found in beeswax could allow finding out which contaminants are found in bee products.
c) The expertise developed in this project could contribute to new research projects that aim to study the effects of toxins present in the environment on the ecosystem.
In ultimele decenii calitatea cerii de albina a scazut din cauza utilizarii crescande a produselor agrochimice in agricultura si tratamentelor chimice aplicate in apicultura. Acesti compusi se acumuleaza in ceara de albine. Aceasta situate a generat un deficit in calitatea cerii si a creat o dependeta generalizata de importurile de ceara de calitate scazuta si ieftina.
Rezultate:
Beneficii pentru fermieri/apicultori:
a) Ceara de albine de calitate va fi produsa pe piata locala in Romania si va deveni accesibila apicultorilor la un pret normal pe piata.
b) Reducerea pierderilor stupilor datorita imbunatatirii sanatatii albinelor
c) Reducerea contaminarii mierii si a altor produse apicole
d) Posibilitatea dezvoltarii apiculturii organice
e) Numarul crescut de albine va aduce beneficii retelei agricole pe scara larga
f) Sisteme de determinare a calitatii vor putea fi implementate pe baza metodelor de analiza ce vor fi produse de Universitatea Bucuresti
g) Diseminarea informatiei se va face prin distribuirea de materiale informative in reviste de specialitate, participarea la congrese pentru apicultori.
Beneficii pentru cercetatori:
A) Metodele dezvoltate in acest proiect ar putea si adaptate pentru alte domenii de activitate, precum purificarea uleiului din peste si alte proceduri de extragere a grasimilor si uleiurilor.
B) Metodele de analiza a compusilor prezenti in ceara de albine ar putea genera sansa de a putea identifica compusi in produsele apicultorilor si a altor agenti de pe piata
C) Expertiza castigata in acest proiect ar putea contribui la dezvoltarea altor proiecte de cercetare care urmaresc identificarea efectelor toxinelor din mediul inconjurator asupra ecosistemului.
