Practice Abstract - Research and innovation

Specialised logging trailer

The OG IR_MP3 in Latvia has developed a version of the forestry trailer that can also be used to transport short logs, thanks to the specific construction of the bunks, whereby it can also be filled 100% with shorter logs. There is currently a trend towards increasing the total loads permitted for trucks on public roads. This makes it possible to transport larger volumes per truck and to pollute the environment less. Full loading leads to a reduction in CO2 emissions per cubic metre of timber transported. Nowadays, companies use more efficient specialized trucks to transport the logs to the side of the road, but in this way the truck used for logging and transporting is the same; it can leave a trailer on the road, drive into the forest, collect the logs, transport them to the side of the road, load them onto the trailer, drive back and load another part into the truck. Finally, it returns to the main road, attaches the trailer and transports the load to its destination.
