2 Practice Abstracts

The olive grove sector generates large quantities of leaves as a by-product and its management has always consisted of crushing and burning them, which is not favorable for the environment. Use of the by-product of the olive grove sector, the leaf, for the extraction of bioactive compounds high added value through the application of green solvents. Development, construction and assembly of a portable and modular pilot plant for the extraction of bioactive compounds present in the olive leaf. Demonstrate the viability of the pilot plant once installed in the oil mills.

Optimization of the extraction process of bioactive compounds present in the olive leaf and analysis of the extracts. Manufacture of a transportable pilot plant that has the ability to be installed in rural areas Obtaining a high added value product with different applications in the market. Adequate conservation of the solvent and its stability over time for its application in the extraction process. Demonstration that the application to different food matrices (PETFOOD and humans) improves their properties.

El sector del olivar genera grandes cantidades de hoja como subproducto y su gestión siempre ha consistido en la trituración y quema de éstos, no siendo favorable para el medio ambiente.Aprovechamiento del subproducto del sector del olivar, la hoja, para la extracción de compuestos bioactivos de alto valor añadido mediante la aplicación de disolventes verdes. Desarrollo, construcción y montaje de una planta piloto portátil y modular para la extracción de compuestos bioactivos presentes en la hoja de olivo, Demostrar la viabilidad de la planta piloto una vez instalada en las almazaras.

Optimización del proceso de extracción de compuestos bioactivos presentes en la hoja de olivo y análisis de los extractos.

Fabricación de una planta piloto transportable y que posee la facultad de poder instalarse en zonas rurales

Obtención de un producto de alto valor añadido con diferentes aplicaciones en el mercado.

Conservación adecuada del disolvente y estabilidad de éste en el tiempo para su aplicación en el proceso de extracción.

Demostración que la aplicación a diferentes matrices alimentarias (PETFOOD y humanos) mejora las propiedades de éstas.

Resultados esperados

R1 Optimización a escala laboratorio del proceso de obtención de los compuestos bioactivos.

R2 Construcción de una planta piloto de extracción de compuestos bioactivos, modular y transportable.

R3 Demostración de la viabilidad del proceso de obtención del extracto en planta piloto.

R4 Estudio de mercado y viabilidad de la aplicación del producto en matrices alimentarias. Los impactos en el mercado previstos son los siguientes:

• Nuevos ingredientes, de origen vegetal, para alimentación humana y piensos animales.

• Mejora de la actividad del mercado incluyendo la valorización de descartes de la hoja de la oliva.

La obtención de estos ingredientes comportará, en comparación con la oferta presente en el mercado:

- Ingredientes alimentarios de alta calidad con propiedades funcionales adecuadas.

- Un nuevo mercado de ingredientes desarrollados.

- Impacto ambiental positivo gracias a la recuperación de los subproductos procedentes del procesado del olivo.

- Mayor sostenibilidad y competitividad de la industria a nivel ambiental y económico a través de productos de mayor calidad y menor pérdida de residuos.

R1 Laboratory-scale optimisation of the process for obtaining bioactive compounds.

R2 Construction of a modular and transportable pilot plant for extracting bioactive compounds.

R3 Demonstration of the viability of the process for obtaining the extract in a pilot plant.

R4 Market study and viability of applying the product in food matrices. The expected market impacts are the following:

• New ingredients, of plant origin, for human consumption and animal feed.

• Improvement of market activity, including the valorisation of olive leaf waste.

The obtaining of these ingredients will lead, compared to the current supply on the market:

- High-quality food ingredients with suitable functional properties.

- A new market for developed ingredients.

- Positive environmental impact thanks to the recovery of by-products from olive processing.

- Greater sustainability and competitiveness of the industry at an environmental and economic level through higher quality products and less waste loss.
