Context

Pathogenic fungi are a major challenge for Austrian garlic cultivation. In recent years, the problem has intensified due to changing weather conditions. Fusarioses cause significant yield losses at all stages of production (in the field, during processing and in storage). Particularly problematic are hidden fungal infections that cause visible damage only during storage or at retail, which is why farms are under great pressure from food retailers demanding smooth delivery to markets. Austrian demand for garlic is largely met by imported goods, although demand for high-quality regional produce is high. The market share of Austrian garlic has multiplied to 25% in the last ten years, although this development has been slowed down mainly by fungal attack.  Currently, there is a particular lack of knowledge about the predominant Fusarium species. Even when the pathogens are clearly identified, it is difficult to control infestations, as neither reliable preventive measures nor suitable and approved plant protection products (both organic and chemical) are available.

Objectives

In Austria, there are major challenges in the management of fungal diseases, especially fusarioses, in garlic: On the one hand, a precise identification of the pathogen is often difficult, on the other hand, neither adequate preventive measures nor more suitable or proven solutions (e.g. plant protection products) are available. The aim of the project is to develop methods for the identification, prevention and control of Fusarium infections. This should reduce yield losses and ensure the high product quality of garlic from organic and integrated cultivation.

Objectives

Activities

  1. Development of test systems for the examination of garlic and soil for colonialization by Fusarium species
  2. Application of these test systems for the examination of the Fusariumi infections of various garlic varieties and soil samples of various locations
  3. Identification of potential causes, sources of infection and options of spreading in the whole production
  4. Examination of the development of the disease on the field, including the identification of critical infection times
  5. Examination of harvesting, drying and storage methods for their influence on the infection rate
  6. Development of recommendations for actions in order to prevent an infestation

Activities

  6. Entwicklung von Handlungsempfehlungen zur Verhinderung des Befalls
