Objectives

Dairy farmers need to combine profitability with the responsibility of protecting human health, animal health/welfare and the environment; this implies quite a lot of data and facts to keep in mind and to consider. The FAO “Guide to good dairy farming practice” can offer a helping hand. It contains many individual practical points of advice that contribute to good dairy farming. Additional information

The main objective of the brochure “Guide to good dairy farming practice” is the production of safe, quality milk which is produced from healthy animals by using sustainable management practices. It focuses on the following key areas:

• animal health;

• milking hygiene;

• nutrition (feed and water);

• animal welfare;

• environment and

• socio-economic management.

The good dairy farming practices and suggested measures (for each key area) are set out in tabular form. Individual fact sheets are provided for each area giving further details on how to implement those practices. The brochure is intended as a resource for dairy farmers (engaged in the production of milk from any dairy species). It encourages to select and to implement those guidelines that are relevant to the individual situation: the focus clearly lies on the desired outcomes, rather than on specific, prescriptive actions/processes.

The practices described have been drawn from best practice guidelines and existing quality assurance schemes around the world, and therefore they will vary in their applicability to various dairying regions. The brochure does not have any legal status and does not supersede national or international requirements.
