Context
Objectives
The project is aimed at developing operational support for the enhancement and promotion of a highly sustainable olive-oil supply chain, through the evaluation of the vocation of the "Terre dell'olivo", the creation of a certification path for territorial sustainability, the analysis of the commercial potential of territorial oils and the definition of specific marketing strategies
Activities
The project is divided into 3 work pakages (WP). WP1 involves the evaluation of the aptitude for olive cultivation of the main soils of the RER and the characterization of the quality of extra virgin olive oil, produced by the synergy between the environment and cultivar of the territory.
In WP2, sustainable agronomic practices and protocols will be implemented to create territorial certification paths for olive growing.
In WP3, a market research will be carried out to assess the commercial potential of local oils, which will be enhanced and promoted through marketing strategies and guided tasting with local products.

3 Practice Abstracts
Thanks to this OG, the olive growers of the Emilia-Romagna Region and in particular of the PDO areas have new tools at their disposal.
The "Map of Olive Lands" is a synthesis of the "Map of Plain Soils" on a scale of 1:50,000 in which environments and soils with similar agronomic behavior have been grouped with respect to the potential of the soil for the growth of the olive tree.
As for the cv. investigated (Nostrana di Brisighella and Correggiolo) it can be stated that: the phenology of the plant depends on the interaction Land x Variety: cv. Correggiolo shows greater differences in the veraison phase; there are differences between the “Terre”, but it is necessary to evaluate the uniform zones from a climatic point of view as highlighted in the literature, the parameters relating to flowering are more dependent on the climate, while those relating to the fruit are more closely linked to the Lands.
The analyzes on oils obtained from cv. Correggiolo and Nostrana highlighted the quality of the olive production of the study areas.
The information gathered in the pilot farms made it possible to draw up a technical guide for defining a sustainability plan. Farms will therefore be able to verify the consistency and effectiveness of the approach over time, with a self-assessment process and by developing improvement actions by defining specific verifiable objectives and periodic reviews. The guide provides an analysis of the level of sustainability of companies in the olive oil sector through qualitative requirements.
Market analysis and consumer testing reveal how EVO sensory qualities are not fully known to consumers. It is, therefore, necessary to carry out a path of consumer education.
In the first phase of the project, the OG has identified the farms suitable for assessing the aptitude for olive growing of the different types of soil in the PDOs of Brisighella and Colline di Romagna, for the realization of the Romagna Olive Lands Charter. These farms have been involved in the enhancement of the quality of extra virgin olive oil and in the creation of specific sustainability certification paths.
In addition, specific olive cultivars of the territory (Nostrana di Brisighella and Correggiolo) have been selected in the aforementioned farms for the development of optimal olive ripening protocols and the production of oils. Each sample of oil obtained was subjected to chemical and sensory analysis.
The expected results of the present Plan are the following:
- Identification of the parameters of the olive growing agro-system capable of influencing the overall quality of the extra virgin olive oil.
- Extension of the results obtained in the "pilot farms" to the whole regional area where the cultivation of the olive is most widespread.
- Regulations containing a set of easily applicable indicators capable of expressing the commitment to the sustainability of the involved structures.
- Certification of territorial sustainability and "VIVA di organizzazione"
- Regional Guidelines for sustainability, adapted to the Romagna olive-growing reality but transferable to other similar realities in terms of geographical location and production strategies.
- The Consumer will be informed about the importance of the quality of regional oils, their link with the territory and their potential in combination with typical local productions.
- Launch a more effective market segmentation policy on new bases.
