Context

By visualizing the two KPIs—Nature and Landscape and Herb-Rich Grassland—reward providers can steer biodiversity and encourage and reward individual agricultural entrepreneurs for their performance. This approach is part of and supported by the Delta Plan for Biodiversity Recovery. A sound revenue model is essential for achieving the societally desired conservation and improvement of biodiversity. Rewarding allows multiple parties to reward dairy farmers' performance, such as the market, banks, lessors, water boards, and other government bodies.

Objectives

The preparatory work has been completed, enabling the large-scale rollout. This has achieved the project objective. The communication plan, the information meeting, and the communication implementation have resulted in over 700 dairy farmers participating in the separation project. Dairy farmers can use the collective finder and the communication materials. Employees of the collectives use the instructions to develop a standardized working method. The new BBM packages will offer dairy farmers the opportunity to contribute to biodiversity in new ways in the future.

De voorbereidende werkzaamheden zijn gerealiseerd waardoor de grootschalige uitrol kon plaatsvinden. Daarmee is de projectdoelstelling gerealiseerd. Het communicatieplan, de informatiebijeenkomst en de uitvoering van de communicatie hebben geleid tot ruim 700 melkveehouders die deelnemen aan het separatie project. De melkveehouders kunnen gebruik maken van de collectievenzoeker en de communicatiematerialen. Medewerkers van de collectieven gebruiken de instructie om tot een eenduidige werkwijze te komen. De nieuwe BBM pakketten bieden melkveehouders in de toekomst de mogelijkheid om op nieuwe manieren bij te dragen aan biodiversiteit. 

Activities

To strengthen nature and the landscape and increase the contribution of dairy farming to biodiversity, the Sustainable Dairy Chain and BoerenNatuur have jointly developed a system for using the key performance indicators (KPIs) "Nature and Landscape" and "Herb-rich Grassland" at the farm level, especially for farmers in areas not eligible for Agri-Environmental and Landscape Management subsidies. Preparatory work is being carried out in this project to enable a large-scale rollout of this method so that all dairy farmers can purchase management packages.

“Om natuur en landschap te versterken en de bijdrage van de melkveehouderij op de biodiversiteit te vergroten hebben de Duurzame Zuivelketen en BoerenNatuur samen een systematiek uitgewerkt hoe de kritische prestatie-indicatoren (KPI’s) ‘Natuur en Landschap’ en ‘Kruidenrijk Grasland’ kunnen worden benut op bedrijfsniveau juist ook voor boeren in gebieden die niet in aanmerking komen voor subsidie in het kader van het Agrarisch Natuur- en Landschapsbeheer. Om een grootschalige uitrol van de werkwijze mogelijk te maken zodat alle melkveehouders beheerpakketten af kunnen afsluiten, worden in dit project voorbereidende werkzaamheden uitgevoerd.

Preparatory work has been completed, enabling the large-scale rollout. This has achieved the project objective. The communication plan, the information meeting, and the communication implementation have resulted in over 700 dairy farmers participating in the separation project. Dairy farmers can use the collective finder and the communication materials. Employees of the collectives use the instructions to develop a standardized working method. The new BBM packages offer dairy farmers the opportunity to contribute to biodiversity in new ways in the future. Furthermore, BoerenNatuur and ZuivelNL have taken steps to connect with potential grant providers through market research. Follow-up steps are needed in this regard; this will be a long-term process involving both consumers and market participants. The analysis of the similarities between the various subsidy streams provides insight into better coordination of the various schemes and thus strengthening the revenue model within the broader project. The project has contributed to the completion of the necessary preparatory work, thus achieving the project objective. This allows over 700 dairy farmers to work on increasing biodiversity on their farms. Moreover, the system can be deployed on a large scale to connect dairy farmers with reward providers.

De analyse tussen de gelijkenissen van de verschillende subsidiestromen bieden inzicht om de diverse regelingen beter op elkaar af te stemmen en daarmee het verdienmodel vanuit het brede project te versterken. Het project heeft ertoe bijgedragen dat de noodzakelijk voorbereidende werkzaamheden zijn uitgevoerd en daarmee is het projectdoel gerealiseerd. Hierdoor kunnen ruim 700 melkveehouders op hun bedrijven werken aan het vergroten van biodiversiteit. Bovendien kan de systematiek op grote schaal ingezet worden om melkveehouders te koppelen aan beloners.
