Kontext

One of the EU's priorities refers to the importance of sustainable economic growth through the smart and sustainable use of resources. Specifically, resources must be used to the fullest in an ecological and economical manner because most are not unlimited. The integration of products and materials in a circular economy makes their value much longer and contributes to the generation of new jobs, the promotion of innovations to obtain competitive advantages and the protection of the environment and people. In order to achieve this objective, it is necessary to reintegrate waste in the production cycle in an ecological manner. Thus, the transition is made to a sustainable economy, increasing the efficiency of resource use and competitiveness. The advantages of the circular economy are of European interest, fact for which strategies, action plans, directives and laws have been elaborated for their materialization, both at European and national level. The Cromatec Plus company aims through this project to transform waste into resources and analyze the compounds resulting from the extraction of by-products from the fruit sector to develop technologies to ensure value-added products in order to support a healthy lifestyle through a diet based on products superior quality. This initiative is in line with the EU's priorities for better waste management and innovation in recycling and reuse. The "BioPowder" project includes activities that have a real impact on increasing the level of the circular economy and is in line with EU priorities on this subject for which programs, policies, action plans, strategies and other initiatives have been developed.

Objectives

The general objective of the project is to develop new innovative products such as organic fruit powders obtained from fruit products (fruit bushes) with high functionality and impact in the agri-food sector by implementing an innovative technological extraction solution, respectively supercritical CO2 extraction. Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) is an emerging eco-friendly technology, very versatile for the superior recovery of sources of biologically active compounds.

Objectives

Obiectivul general al proiectului este de a dezvolta produse noi inovative de tipul pudrelor din fructe ecologice obtinute din produse pomicole (arbusti fructiferi) cu functionalitate ridicata si impact in sectorul agroalimentar prin implementarea unei solutii tehnologice inovative de extractie, respectiv extractia cu CO2 supercritic. Extractia in fluide supercritice (SFE –„supercritical fluid extraction”) este o tehnologie emergenta de tip eco-friendly, foarte versatila pentru valorificarea superioara a surselor de compusi biologic activi.

Activities

1) Development of a supercritical CO2 extraction technology to ensure the capitalization of existing by-products in the fruit sector and its optimization at pilot level, in maximum 18 months (project implementation period).
2) Obtaining 2 innovative technologies that will capitalize on the by-products (biomass) from the fruit sector, in maximum 18 months (project implementation period)
3) Obtaining an innovative product in the form of bioactive powder, in maximum 18 months (project implementation period).

Activities

1) Dezvoltarea unei tehnologii de extractie cu CO2 supercritic care sa asigure valorificarea produselor secundare existente din sectorul pomicol si optimizarea acesteia la nivel pilot, in maxim 18 luni (perioada de implementare a proiectului).
2) Obtinerea a 2 tehnologii inovatoare care vor valorifica subprodusele (biomasa) din sectorul pomicol, in maxim 18 luni (perioada de implementare a proiectului)
3) Obtinerea unui produs inovativ sub forma de pudra bioactiva, in maxim 18 luni (perioada de implementare a proiectului).

Additional comments

The project identified a niche market, namely plant extracts. They preserve the active compounds from fruits and plants and are presented in the form of dry, soft and fluid extracts. The applicant identified as raw material for these extracts, the so-called fruit waste, respectively pulp, skin, peels, seeds and thus contributes to the recovery of fruit by-products.
There are 2 categories of consumers who buy food supplements. In the first category there are consumers of all ages and from all social and professional categories, who inherit sensitivities and biological data that are reflected in difficulties of growth and development, then in difficulties of the profession, and later in the avalanche of inconveniences, dissatisfaction and suffering caused by aging. Also in this first category must be placed those who practice sports and carry out competitive actions, very demanding and pushed to forms of high risk and stress, impossible to sustain without a consistent intake of food supplements. Consumers in this category are advised by specialists (doctors, nutritionists, coaches) who follow the evolution of the person advised and make the necessary corrections in the administration of supplements.
The second category is composed of consumers with very obvious imitation behavior, sensitive to fashion, egocentric, eccentric, etc. They ensure the strong upward trend in the demand for nutritional supplements, especially in developed countries. In most cases, consumers in this category do not turn to specialists, administering their supplements according to their own beliefs and recipes. It is estimated that in developed countries, about a third of the population is in this situation.

Additional information

The agri-food sector, including orchards, faces major challenges in order to develop and implement requirements that can lead to obtaining functional products with added value, safe, in conditions of efficiency, ensuring environmental protection and sustainability. In order to respond to this complex set of scientific and engineering challenges, it is necessary to develop new processes and products.
Traditional powder production techniques require inadequately relatively high temperatures to maintain the stability of heat-sensitive bioactive substances. A viable alternative is the application of an encapsulation technique in the presence of scCO2 that will allow obtaining new products such as powders that maintain CBA quality due to low spray agent temperatures and inert atmosphere.
Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) is an emerging eco-friendly technology, very versatile for the superior use of biologically active compounds (CBA). It is considered the capitalization of by-products from fruit processing), identification of the target CBA (polyphenols, carotenoids, anthocyanins, polyunsaturated fatty acids), their microencapsulation in order to obtain high functionality composites required by the market, thus ensuring interconnections between the "actors" in the food chain and the adoption of the principles of the circular bioeconomy.
