Physical & demographic characteristics of LAG area

The Sarntal Alps form a semicircular mountain ridge in the center of South Tyrol, in northern Italy. The mountain region and its 12 associated municipalities extend over almost 700 km² into a contiguous area. The highest elevation is 2,781 m, and the village centers lie between 830 and 1,290 m above sea level.

Die Sarntaler Alpen bilden einen halbkreisförmigen Bergkamm in der Mitte Südfirols, im Norden von Italien. Das Berggebiet und die 12 dazugehörigen Gemeinden erstecken sich auf knapp 700 Km² zu einer zusammenhängenden Fläche. Die höchste Erhöhung beträgt 2.781 m und die Ortskerne liegen zwischen 830 Hm bis 1.290 Hm.

Assets & land use of the LAG area

As the data and analyses show, the economic situation is quite similar throughout the LEADER area. Individual sectors are favored and growing in some municipalities (tourism and crafts), while in others they are disadvantaged and declining. Small-scale agriculture and trade in the small villages face very difficult conditions. Limited and inaccessible farmland, costly and high-risk measures for small and micro-enterprises, sparsely populated areas with long distances, and costly infrastructure for public services are the clearly defined constraints of this mountain region.

Wie die Daten und Analysen aufzeigen, ist die wirtschaftliche Situafion im gesamten LEADER-Gebiet ziemlich ähnlich. Einzelne Sektoren sind in einigen Gemeinden bevorzugt und wachsend (Tourismus und Handwerk), in anderen Gemeinden wieder benachteiligt und rückläufig. Sehr schwierige Bedingungen haben die klein-strukturierte
Landwirtschaft und der Handel in den kleinen Dörfern.
