Käre vum Séi and barley in water protection areas - On‑farm trials showcasing sustainable cropping in sensitive ecological zones

Summary

Several demo trials grew different wheat varieties over several years to identify those best adapted to the Upper Sûre region. The on-farm trials showcased sustainable cropping in sensitive ecological zones without the use of plant protection products. The results guide variety selection for the ‘Käre vum Séi’ initiative, focusing on sustainable wheat cultivation in the sensitive catchment of the Upper Sûre reservoir.

In Kaundorf, the ‘Käre vum Séi’ community project conducts coordinated small-plot trials to expand the range of wheat varieties suited to local growing conditions. The aim is to identify varieties that perform well without relying on plant protection products, while still meeting the quality standards set by the ‘Käre vum Séi’ specification.

The trial includes ten wheat varieties – eight with strong agronomic potential and two with known low resistance to disease. Among them is 'Nordkapp', a variety approved for organic farming. These varieties are tested in four different treatment variants, each replicated four times, resulting in 160 randomised trial plots on an FLIK-designated parcel.

The main evaluation criteria are breadmaking quality, yield and resistance to fungal diseases. Following harvest, researchers carry out grain and flour analyses, while disease pressure and plant responses to growth regulators or fungicides are monitored throughout the growing season.

The multi-year design also tracks long-term performance trends – assessing whether certain commonly used varieties are declining and whether new candidates show promise under the specific soil and climate conditions of the Upper Sûre region.
