Objectives

Objective of the innovation project was to establish a tried and tested advisory and management system in order to be able to raise and fatten pigs with undocked tails without animal welfare related injuries or loss of cuts. The complexity of the causes for the occurrence of tail lesions, which are seen as the result of effects of endogenous and exogenous causes, points out that all influencing factors must be optimized to achieve a long-term and gradual change in tail-docking practice.

Objectives

Ziel des Innovationsprojektes war es, ein praxiserprobtes Beratungs- und Managementsystem zu etablieren, um langfristig Schweine mit ungekürzten Schwänzen ohne tierschutzrelevante Verletzungen und Teilstückverluste aufziehen und mästen zu können. Die Komplexität der Ursachen für das Auftreten von Schwanzläsionen, die als Ergebnis der Einwirkungen endogener und exogener Ursachen gesehen werden, macht deutlich, dass alle Einflussfaktoren optimiert werden müssen, um langfristig und schrittweise eine Änderung der Kupierpraxis erreichen zu können.

Activities

In the pilot project 18 pig farmers from Thuringia took part together with their supervising veterinarians, experts and advisers over several stages:

  • Status survey (cause/ risk analysis), data collection on endogenous and exogenous factors (housing conditions, feed, animal health, climate in the barns, etc.)
  • Training of employees and advisors, advising the farmers
  • On-farm trials: Implementation of farm-specific action plans (changing individual factors) and control of success

Knowledge transfer to other farmers

Activities

An dem Pilotprojekt nahmen 18 Schweinehalter aus Thüringen gemeinsam mit ihren betreuenden Tierärzten, Experten und Beratern über mehrere Etappen teil:

  • Statuserhebung (Ursachen-/Risikoanalyse), Datenerhebung zu endogenen und exogenen Faktoren (Haltungsbedingungen, Futter, Tiergesundheit, Stallklima, etc.)
  • Schulung von Mitarbeitern und Beratern, Betriebsberatung
  • Betriebserprobungen: Umsetzung betriebsspezifischer Maßnahmenpläne (Veränderung einzelner Faktoren) und Erfolgskontrolle
