Objectives
In Flanders, some 15 000 tonnes of foliage remains from greenhouse growers are left over each year, but because of the contamination with clips and nylon rope, among other things, there is no sustainable solution for a large part of this residual flow. In addition to the ecological issue, there is also an economic issue here. The average cost to remove this waste stream is €176/tonne. The aim of this project is to arrive at a sustainable and profitable solution for the processing of the foliage residues. In the first place, we look at farm composting and applications in the bioeconomy.
Objectives
In Vlaanderen komt jaarlijks zo’n 15 000 ton loofresten van serretelers vrij, maar door de vervuiling met onder andere clipsen en nylontouw bestaat voor een groot deel van deze reststroom geen duurzame oplossing. Naast het ecologische vraagstuk, stelt zich hier ook een economisch vraagstuk. De kost om deze reststroom af te voeren bedraagt gemiddeld €176/ton. Dit project heeft als doelstelling om tot een duurzame en rendabele oplossing te komen voor de verwerking van de loofresten. In eerste instantie kijken we naar boerderijcomposteren en toepassingen in de bio-economie.
Activities
Alternative and innovative ways of processing will be sought within two possible valorisation options, i.e. farm composting and applications for materials. Via a multi-actor approach, the needs of the different sectors involved will be harmonised and a number of promising options will be tested (e.g. compostable ropes and clips, separation techniques, valorisation of fibre-rich residual flows). For both valorisation options, farm composting and bioeconomy, cost-benefit assessments and SWOT analyses will be prepared for the chosen valorisation options and the innovative elements.
Activities
Er zal gezocht worden naar alternatieve en innovatieve verwerkingsroutes binnen twee mogelijke valorisatiepistes, nl. boerderijompostering en materiaaltoepassing. Via een multi-actor approach worden de noden van de betrokken sectoren op elkaar afgestemd en worden een aantal beloftevolle pistes uitgetest (bv. composteerbare touwen en clipsen, scheidingstechnieken, valorisatie vezelrijke reststromen).
Voor beide valorisatieopties, boerderijcompostering en bio-economie, worden kosten-baten evaluaties en SWOT-analyses opgesteld voor de gekozen valorisatiepistes en de vernieuwende elementen.
