1 Practice Abstracts

Cicadas are actually harmless to humans and nature. However, the reed cicada has evolved from a harmless insect into a highly dangerous vector of diseases, including bacterial potato tuber wilt. The disease, which was only discovered in 2002, causes potato tubers to become soft and rubbery. The main aim of the project is to secure the long-term future of potato cultivation in Hesse and beyond. Potato varieties are being tested for their tolerance to the cicada in field trials at various locations. Planting material is also being analysed and the insects monitored.
