With insect larvae, expansive protein feeds such as soy or fish meal can be replaced with regionally and sustainably produced feeds. Regional production opens the possibility for farmers to produce their own protein feed. In addition, it makes it possible to feed live and unprocessed larvae. This corresponds to the natural feeding behavior of many farm animals. The use of live feed and the high-quality amino acid spectrum of the larval protein has the potential to improve animal welfare and health in a natural way. So far, however, there is no practical experience regarding this method of feeding. 

Mit Insektenlarven können teure Proteinfuttermittel wie Soja oder Fischmehl durch regional und nachhaltig erzeugte Futtermittel ersetzt werden. Die regionale Produktion eröffnet den Landwirt die Möglichkeit ihr Proteinfutter selbst zu produzieren. Zusätzlich wird dadurch die Fütterung der lebenden, unverarbeiteten Larven möglich. Dies entspricht der natürlichen Ernährungsweise vieler Nutztiere. Die Beschäftigung mit Lebendfutter sowie das hochwertige Aminosäurespektrum des Larvenproteins hat das Potential das Tierwohl und die Tiergesundheit auf natürliche Weise zu verbessern. Bisher gibt es dazu jedoch noch keine Praxiserfahrung.
