Recording of the carbon emission and sequestration from the production of alfalfa forage to evaluate its contribution to the climate change mitigation

Objectives
The goal of the project is to highlight and to document the benefits, in term of environmental sustainability, of forages from the alfalfa meadows produced by the members of the Italian Forage Supply Chain (Filiera Italiana Foraggi).
The project aims:
• to evaluate the contribution of the multi-annual alfalfa meadows to soil carbon sequestration;
• to collect and to document the elements of sustainability, also to support an ecological certification.
The description and the analysis of the forage production process will also allow:
• to determine the distinctive characteristics of the forages compared to similar products obtained from other sources;
• to formulate good production practices.
Objectives
L’obiettivo del progetto è evidenziare e documentare i plus di sostenibilità ambientale dei foraggi da prati di erba medica prodotti dai soci di Filiera Italiana Foraggi (FIF).
Si punta a:
• valutare il contributo delle foraggere poliennali al sequestro di carbonio nel suolo;
• raccogliere gli elementi di sostenibilità e documentarli, anche a supporto di una certificazione ecologica.
La descrizione e l’analisi del processo produttivo dei foraggi permetterà anche di determinarne le peculiarità produttive rispetto a prodotti analoghi di altra provenienza e di formulare buone pratiche produttive.

Below is a description of the main project activities:
1) PROMOTION OF COOPERATION.
2) SPECIFIC ACTIONS RELATED TO THE PLAN REALIZATION:
ACTION 1 - Survey of the lands and the production techniques (agronomic and processing) of the alfalfa-derived products in the Emilia Romagna region.
ACTION 2 - Application to the alfalfa of models for the calculation of the CO sequestration and the Carbon and Water footprint.
ACTION 3 Study for the environmental labeling of the products of the alfalfa meadows and evaluation of the contribution of their derived products to the reduction of the carbon footprint.
3) DISSEMINATION OF THE RESULTS.

AZIONE 3 Studio per etichettatura ambientale per i prodotti del prato di erba medica e valutazione del contributo alla riduzione dell'impronta del carbonio dei prodotti derivati.

1 Practice Abstracts
The expected results are the following.
1. Measurement of the soil carbon sequestration by alfalfa cultivations, also compared to arable and other forage crops: directed during the project, from a scenario perspective using the prediction models available.
2. Environmental footprints of products: carbon and water footprint.
3. Evaluation of possible measures to reduce the carbon footprint during the farming, the processing and the transformation of the products: indication of good mitigation practices.
4. Assessment, expressed as variations of tons of CO2eq, of emissions reduction achievable through the implementation of production techniques alternative to the present ones (e.g. Sod Seeding).
5. Requisites for Environmental Product Declarations for forages and dried alfalfa.
I risultati attesi sono i seguenti.
1. La misura del carbonio sequestrato al suolo dalla coltivazione di erba medica, anche in confronto con seminativi e altre foraggere: diretto durante il progetto, in un’ottica di scenario utilizzando i modelli di predizione a disposizione.
2. Impronte ambientali dei prodotti: impronta del carbonio e idrica.
3. Valutazione di possibili interventi di riduzione dell’impronta carbonica in fase di coltivazione, di lavorazione e trasformazione dei prodotti: indicazione delle buone pratiche di mitigazione.
4. Stima, espressa in variazioni di tonnellate di CO2eq, delle minori emissioni ottenibili applicando tecniche produttive alternative alle presenti (p.e. semina su sodo).
5. Elementi per la certificazione ecologica di prodotto per i foraggi.
