Kontext

Industrial hemp is known for its great potential to produce a wide range of products due to its versatility. However, its growth is limited by the lack of processing and transformation facilities, which in turn discourages large-scale cultivation and keeps it a minor crop. Given this issue and the emerging trend of industries transitioning towards sustainability and using natural fibers as renewable resources, the Hempnova project views the reindustrialization of hemp cultivation as a significant opportunity to promote the diversification of the agricultural economy. Unlike other EU countries, Spain has a conservative approach to industrial hemp cultivation, only allowing the production of grain, seeds, and fiber. The primary processing of hemp stalks through decortication, which separates fibers and hurds, is crucial for a stable supply chain in manufacturing. Europe, as per the European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA), hasn't fully utilized hemp's potential due to supply shortages and limited processing facilities, with only 12 decortication sites. Although global demand for hemp is rising, Spain lacks primary processing facilities, creating a supply gap and dependency on imports, which are subject to price fluctuations. Additionally, the industry faces challenges due to a lack of reliable information, market studies, and accurate pricing data for hemp products.

Activities

Agronomic study of hemp cultivation for fiber transformation, design and fabrication of prototypes adapted for hemp processing and their validation, obtaining types of fiber and hemp hurds from primary stem transformation and validating them as raw materials, and analysis of the viability of the new industrial process and potential market.

Activities

The Hempnova project aims to establish Spain's first industrial hemp fiber production model, developing a sustainable supply chain to meet national demand and innovate new eco-friendly products. Key outcomes include the design and validation of processing prototypes, production of high-quality fibers and hurds from hemp stalks, and an analysis of the new industrial process's viability and market potential. The project seeks to overcome Spain's lack of hemp processing facilities, which limits large-scale cultivation and economic diversification.

For practitioners, implementing this knowledge means significant benefits: stable supply of raw materials, increased profitability by utilizing the entire hemp plant, and fostering a sustainable agriculture model. Farmers can diversify crops, improve productivity, and tap into a growing market for natural fibers, while reducing reliance on imports and mitigating price fluctuations. This project presents a valuable opportunity to boost the agricultural economy, enhance self-sufficiency, and align with global sustainability trends.

The overall objective of the project is to develop the first industrial hemp fiber production model in Spain, in order to generate a value chain around the sector, ensuring self-sufficiency to meet national demand and develop new products as an alternative source of natural and sustainable raw material

The hempnova project plans to industrialize the process and promote the cultivation of hemp in Spain so that the entire industry can recover.
