Objectives
As Campylobacter is a very common organism in both domestic and wild animals, the environment around poultry houses provides a constant source of contamination. For this reason, biosecurity is essential for Campylobacter prevention at poultry farms. The project CamCon developed a manual that aims to highlight and explain these procedures in a way that can be implemented directly by the poultry industry, e. g. necessary facilities in and around the broiler house.

As Campylobacter is a very common organism in both domestic and wild animals, the environment around poultry houses provides a constant source of contamination. For this reason, biosecurity is essential for Campylobacter prevention at poultry farms.
Recommendations on necessary facilities in and around the broiler house include the following:
• The broiler house should have an outside area with a concrete apron in front of entrances. The aprons will reduce the transport of dirt into the broiler house.
• The broiler house must be an enclosed area separate from the outside surroundings.
• There should be an entry room creating a biosecurity barrier between the outer area and the inside room with the chickens. It must meet the requirements of correct and safe entry and exit and have a dirty zone and a clean zone. A hygiene barrier should be established.
• The entry room must have facilities for hand wash and hand disinfection. Separate hangers for outdoor and indoor clothes. Separate tools for the dirty and clean zones and a boot dip in the clean zone.
• Openings and cracks in the outer walls, windows and gates should be repaired and closed to prevent rodents from entering the broiler house.
• Inside the broiler house cracks in the floor should be repaired during the down period to allow effective cleaning and disinfection, and to eliminate hiding places for beetles,
• If possible, special fly screens should be mounted in front of the ventilation inlets to prevent entry of flies and insects. Flies should also be avoided in the entry room, e.g. by having a screen door or an insect curtain at the door to the entry room.
