Objectives
From 2 to 4% of mushroom growers` annual costs may be attributed to the prevention and control of dry bubble disease. It is very difficult to find a treatment for this disease since white mushrooms are sensitive to most fungicides, the disease has developed resistance to most of the few effective treatments and many of the remaining effective treatments have been banned by law. A group of researchers from the Spanish White Mushroom Research, Experimentation and Services Center are conducting studies on integrated control of the disease and have obtained promising results using compost tea.

Activities
Dry bubble disease causes important economic losses to white mushroom growers. The disease rapidly creates resistance to fungicides and currently Prochlorax-Manganese is the only effective treatment. Researchers from the Spanish White Mushroom Research, Experimentation and Services Center tested applying compost tea obtained from composted spent mushroom growing substrate. The tea was sprayed on a white mushroom cultivation that had been infected with the disease. Results showed that the treatment was more effective than Prochlorax-Manganese control of dry bubble disease and hardly affected white mushroom growth. This opens up new possibilities for integrated control of white mushroom disease with organic methods.
