Context
Goat production systems in Extremadura are unique compared to other regions. The SMART GOAT project seeks to have a significant impact on the objectives of the European Innovation Partnership (EIP), promoting a dairy goat sector focused on cheese production under PDO conditions, respecting the environment and using resources efficiently to be economically viable, productive and competitive.
Historically, dairy goat herds were small and individually managed, being a source of protein in rural areas. The intensification of the goat sector has increased production, but also the demands in terms of animal welfare and sustainability. The modern management of these herds requires advanced technologies to handle large volumes of data and improve decision-making.
Globally, livestock farming faces significant challenges such as the need to increase productivity while ensuring sustainability, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, meet consumer expectations on animal welfare and the environment, and respect the interactions between animal and human health under the OneHealth concept.
Innovation in digital technologies is essential to address these challenges, although it can be complicated by the costs and complexity associated with implementing and maintaining these systems. The SMART GOAT initiative is intended to address some of these needs in the goat sector.
Objectives
This operational group focuses on promoting and driving the development of systems for the integration of data collected from different sources on dairy goat farms and the modelling of the same using Machine Learning techniques for prescriptive purposes, with a collaborative approach that encourages the exchange and integration of data from the farm to the factories, which allows the traceability of the product to be maintained in the different integration units (cheeses from different DOPs of Extremadura), taking into account the concept of interoperability. The implementation of these systems would allow progress in the digital transition throughout the entire goat milk value chain.
Objectives

Additional information
- ACTIVITY 1: The definition of the variables, dimensions and measurable indicators is covered.
In addition, data collection is carried out to generate an architecture that allows the data obtained on the farms to be collected and the previous variables to be integrated.
The design of the individual identification device that facilitates the individualised information collection system is also carried out.
- ACTIVITY 2: A task is developed to generate an adequate volume of data related to nutritional, environmental, animal welfare and health variables. It involves developing a cloud-based calculation engine, where the optimisation model will be implemented in the parameters of each process to achieve optimal overall performance.
- ACTIVITY 3: It involves carrying out the design, development and implementation of a management system for digital traceability of goat's milk that reaches the PDOs.
- ACTIVITY 4: The objective is focused on the dissemination to the public of the resolution of the aid granted, the project idea, the start-up and the results obtained during the demonstration phase through different media.
- ACTIVITY 5: This involves carrying out the tasks of drafting and signing agreements between the members of the consortium, and creating the project organisation chart, in addition to organising the meeting of the Steering Committees or General Assembly for the launch of the project, its monitoring, review of the results and its closure, together with the supervision of compliance with the project progress indicators and the collection of financial documentation for the execution of expense justification.

Implementing a system of computer applications for the analysis of productive and quality indicators of goat milk on a farm can bring numerous benefits and expected results. Some notable points may be: the ability to detect problems early based on the results obtained with the continuous monitoring of the different parameters or productivity indicators.
The professional who implements these activities on his farm can benefit in different areas: starting with the main and most important point, the increase in productivity, by optimizing the performance of his livestock by periodically evaluating the indicators of the milk obtained, which will help in a more efficient management of his herd and its feeding. By evaluating these parameters, costs can be reduced in important points such as feeding, prevention of certain diseases or reproductive systems.
In short, the implementation of these computer applications will provide the farmer with decision-making based on previous and current data, which will bring him closer to making appropriate and personalized decisions for his farm.
