Objectives

Mushroom production is an important sector in Northern Ireland, France and Eastern Europe. Growers face high production costs since they frequently have to renew the casing soil where the mushrooms grow. This casing soil is mainly composed of peat which is becoming increasingly expensive, as peat sources are becoming scarcer or are protected as nature areas, and transportation costs for peat are high. The present project explored a way to reduce costs by re-using non-spent casing soil to lower peat consumption. (see additional information field)

Additional information

The SMS (valorisation of Spent Mushroom Substrate) project developed a machine which recovers non spent casing soil by separating the top soil layer from the spent lower layer. After the soil has been separated, it is washed to reduce mineral content and sterilized so it can be reused. In addition to reducing costs by reusing non spent casing soil, spent soil can be sold as compost for horticulture creating new sources of income for growers.

The SMS project has also found that spent casing soil from oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus) production can be used as a biofilter to eliminate odours and harmful gases in the food industry. This discovery adds value to spent casing soil, creating other sources of income for growers.
