Objectives
In 2017, sweet potatoes were grown for the first time on Flemish plots. The lack of adapted mechanisation for the cultivation of sweet potatoes has been the main barrier to scale up and fill in the potential for local sweet potato cultivation. The aim of this OG is to bring together several companies with expertise in the cultivation of sweet potatoes in order to exchange knowledge on plant mechanization, harvest mechanization and mechanical weed control and together define and tackle the main bottlenecks. The results will contribute to a better quality of the sweet potato, a higher labour efficiency and a lower cost price and a stronger competitive position in the market.
Objectives
Activities
The OG will tackle the bottlenecks regarding mechanisation for the 3 most labour-intensive cultivation activities (planting, weed control and harvesting). The strengths and weaknesses of the methods will be identified by means of an extensive inventory of the available mechanisation. Adjustments will be formulated in order to be able to use the machines successfully in the cultivation of sweet potatoes. Subsequently, various methods of mechanical weed control in combination with different types of cultivation systems will be evaluated in a demo trial and on a practical plot. By means of trial field visits with machine demonstrations, the results will be disseminated.
Activities
