MeadowWise: Future-oriented grazing in Flanders

Objectives
Successful pasturing has become a big challenge for many Flemish dairy farmers, partly due to the introduction of milking robots, changing climate conditions and the lack of financial incentives. Nevertheless, the motivation for grazing is high, both among constumers and dairy farmers. In this operational group, a diverse group of dairy farmers wants to apply grazing in a more well-considered way in order to increase their profitability and to respond to the market demand and to contribute to the climate objectives.
Objectives
Succesvol beweiden is voor vele Vlaamse melkveehouders een grote uitdaging geworden onder meer door de opkomst van melkrobots, veranderende klimaatomstandigheden en het gebrek aan financiële stimulansen. Nochtans is de drijfveer voor weidegang wel groot, zowel langs de kant van de afnemer als bij de melkveehouder zelf. In deze operationele groep wil een diverse groep veehouders meer doordacht beweiden om zo hun rendabiliteit te verhogen, in te spelen op de marktvraag en mee te werken aan de klimaatdoelstellingen.
Activities
The group focuses on three major obstacles: the combination of robotic milking and pasture grazing, climate adaptation of grassland and pasture and the investigation of new earning models in pasture grazing. The good practices and new knowledge resulting from this operational group will be combined and disseminated to the sector via the project partners in order to eventually increase the support for grazing in Flanders.
Activities
De groep focust zich op drie grote obstakels: de combinatie van robotmelken en weidegang, klimaatadaptatie van gras- en weiland en het onderzoeken van nieuwe verdienmodellen bij beweiding. De goede praktijken en nieuwe kennis die uit deze operationele groep voortvloeien worden gebundeld en verspreid in de sector via de projectpartners om op termijn het draagvlak voor beweiding in Vlaanderen te vergroten.
