Meadow orchards with mulch and old grass strips

Context
Yield-orientated fruit cultivation requires vital fruit trees. If the cuttings are regularly removed from the orchard, nutrients are removed from the crop and cuttings are produced, which can be a problem, especially in regions with low precipitation and low fertility. On the other hand, the structural diversity of meadow orchards in combination with species-rich undergrowth guarantees a high number of animal species, and meadow orchards are among the most species-rich habitats.
Für den ertragsorientierten Streuobstbau braucht man vitale Obstbäume. Fährt man das Mähgut der Streuobstwiese regelmäßig ab, werden zum einem dem Bestand Nährstoffe entzogen, zum anderen fällt Schnittgut an, wofür gerade in niederschlagsarmen Regionen mit wenig Viehhaltung die Verwertung zum Problem wird. Auf der anderen Seite ist die Strukturvielfalt der Streuobstwiesen in Verbindung mit artenreichem Unterwuchs ein Garant für eine hohe Tierartenzahl, Streuobstbestände gehören zu den artenreichsten Lebensräumen.
Objectives
The aim of the project is to show that by alternating between mulching the grass growth along the rows of trees and leaving generous strips of old grass, a viable compromise between yield-orientated orchard cultivation with good regional added value from the fruit yield and the promotion of biodiversity in the structurally rich orchard meadow, i.e. between agriculture and nature conservation, is possible. This innovative management concept will be further developed and optimised on the basis of accompanying studies in the district of Kelheim and in Franconia.
Objectives
Ziel des Projektes ist es, zu zeigen, dass durch den Wechsel zwischen Mulchen des Grasaufwuchses entlang der Baumreihen und großzügigen stehengebliebenen Altgrasstreifen ein tragfähiger Kompromiss zwischen ertragsorientiertem Streuobstbau mit guter regionaler Wertschöpfung aus dem Obstertrag und der Förderung der Artenvielfalt auf der strukturreichen Streuobstwiese, also zwischen Landwirtschaft und Naturschutz, möglich ist. Dieses innovative Bewirtschaftungskonzept wird anhand von Begleituntersuchungen im Lkr. Kelheim und in Franken praxistauglich weiterentwickelt und optimiert.
