Objectives

Water scarcity will be one of the main challenges of European agriculture in the coming years. Climate change will reduce annual precipitation in Mediterranean countries, while increasing the frequency of summer droughts in the rest of the continent. In any of these contexts, it will be necessary to better manage water resources for agriculture production. The OPIRIS project developed an easy to use online decision support tool that helps farmers to optimise both water and fertiliser use, to make the most out of available resources. Additional information

OPIRIS gathered information from other research projects on water and fertiliser productivity in fruit trees and green houses in a database. This database was used to create the decision support tool, which subsequently uses real time data from the plots to automatically schedule water and fertiliser doses. Plot information is collected through sensors which measure local climate conditions, soil water content and plant water intake.

The OPIRIS online decision support tool provides an easy to use interface which can save between 15 and 30% of water and optimise fertiliser use by avoiding percolation losses. The tool database is enriched with information collected from users, to optimise the automatic scheduling functions. In addition the information collected can be used to compare the costs of different watering scheduling schemes using several irrigation systems. For more information, visit the project website.
