Local hop products, a new diversification sector providing new craft breweries
Houblon de terroir, création d'une filière de diversification pour les agriculteurs
Objectives
Farmers are looking for new crops with a high added value. The craft beer sector in France is increasing each day (one new brewery each day). 80 % of hop used by this breweries is imported mainly from America. The goal of this project is to help farmers growing hops providing them advices, resarch, training, process and marketing.

De plus de plus d'agriculteurs recherchent des cultures de diversification à haute valeur ajoutée. En parallèle le secteur de la brasserie artisanale explose en France (1 nouvelle brasserie se crée par jour) et 80 % du houblon utilisé par ces brasseries est importé, principalement des Etats-Unis. L'ojectif de ce projet est d'aider les agriculteurs de Nouvelle-Aquitaine à produire du houblon, en leur fournissant du conseil, R&D, des formations, une solution de transformation et commercialisation.
Activities
We started with a experimental plot testing 15 differents varieties. In the same time, we are encouraging farmers growing hops and training them. We are working on shared materials, plants propagation, pellet processing and hops marketing.

Activities
Nous avons commencé le projet par la mise en place d'une parcelle expérimentale. Nous y testons 15 variétés de houblon différentes. Dans le même temps, nous encourageons des agriculteurs à cultiver du houblon. Nous les formons. Nous travaillons sur le partage de matériel, la propagation et le choix des plants de houblon, le processus de transformation et la mise en marché.

“At the end of 2021, producers who sell under the HOPEN brand created and joined together in the Houblons de terroir association, to transform hops into pellets, share knowledge, represent its members at the national level, and pool production (equipment , labor, etc.). The legal and administrative set-up of the association was structured in collaboration with the CA47. This association makes it possible to strengthen the links between its members, to energize and support the development of the regional sector Producers can thus take full advantage of the strength of the collective.
Fin 2021, les producteurs qui vendent sous la marque HOPEN ont créé et se sont regroupés dans l’association Houblons de terroir, pour transformer le houblon en pellets, partager des connaissances, représenter ses membres au niveau national, et mutualiser la production (matériel, main d’œuvre, …). Le montage juridique et administratif de l’association s’est structuré en collaboration avec la CA47. Cette association permet de renforcer les liens entre ses adhérents, de dynamiser et de soutenir le développement de la filière régionale. Les producteurs peuvent ainsi tirer tous les avantages de la force du collectif.
All the results collected allowed the gradual increase in knowledge of all the partners on the technical route of hops, in the monitoring of its phenology and the problems of pests observed in the context of Lot-et-Garonne. The results are preliminary because only based on the first three years of planting (which expects its full yield potential after 3 years) but nevertheless highlight varieties (Cascade, Mount Hood, Magnum, Willamette) more adapted to the context of the Lot- et-Garonne in terms of production, quality and resistance to pests. All of the data collected and their statistical processing for interpretation of trends was presented during the steering committees to the various partners. The data obtained in 2019 in particular were discussed and optimized to ensure good coordination and quality of the results obtained in this project. The various interns involved also provided analyzes and partial results in their internship reports. This project and the involvement of Bordeaux Sciences Agro staff was the subject of a presentation to the Agroecology department of Bordeaux Sciences Agro. An invitation was proposed to Brice Giffard to present this approach and the main results during the Houblon Symposium organized in Nancy in October 2022. Several results are being developed for publication in specialized journals.
L’ensemble des résultats collectés ont permis la montée en connaissances progressives de l’ensemble des partenaires sur l’itinéraire technique du houblon, dans le suivi de sa phénologie et des problématiques de bioagresseurs observés dans le contexte du Lot-et-Garonne. Les résultats sont préliminaires car uniquement basés sur les trois premières années de plantation (qui attend son plein potentiel de rendement après 3 ans) mais mettent néanmoins en évidence des variétés (Cascade, Mount Hood, Magnum, Willamette) plus adaptées au contexte du Lot-et-Garonne en termes de production, de qualité et de résistance aux bioagresseurs.
L’ensemble des données collectées et leur traitement statistique pour interprétation des tendances a été présenté lors des comités de pilotage aux différents partenaires. Les données obtenues en 2019 notamment ont été discutées et optimisées pour assurer la bonne coordination et la qualité des résultats obtenus dans ce projet. Les différents stagiaires impliqués ont également fourni des analyses et résultats partiels dans leurs rapports de stage. Ce projet et l’implication du personnel de Bordeaux Sciences Agro a fait l’objet d’une présentation au département Agroécologie de Bordeaux Sciences Agro. Une invitation a été proposée à Brice Giffard de présenter cette démarche et les principaux résultats lors du Symposium du Houblon organisé à Nancy en octobre 2022. Plusieurs résultats sont en cours de valorisation pour publication en revues spécialisées.
A technical-economic benchmark has been drawn up at the national level using figures from the different regions, and will be published during 2023. This benchmark constitutes an additional source of support for supporting producers or future hop producers. , by aggregating a large number of data and situations. This work was carried out within the Interhoublon inter-professional association (owner of the repository), with the help of the Northern Chamber of Agriculture, the Houblons de Terroir project and the Alsacienne hops cooperative. At the same time, work on structuring the sector at the national level has been initiated with traditional Alsatian producers. An Inter-profession was created in February 2020, Interhoublon, where the Nouvelle Aquitaine sector, Houblons de Terroir, is a member. We organized the first National Hop Congress at the Sainte-Livrade agricultural high school in October 2020, which brought together all French hop growers and players in the sector. "
Un référentiel technico-économique a été rédigé au niveau national en reprenant les chiffres des différentes régions, et sera publié au cours de l’année 2023. Ce référentiel constitue une source supplémentaire d’appui pour l’accompagnement des producteurs ou futurs producteurs de houblon, en agrégeant un nombre important de données et de situations. Ce travail a été conduit au sein de l’interprofession Interhoublon (propriétaire du référentiel), avec l’aide de la chambre d’agriculture du Nord, le projet Houblons de Terroir et la coopérative Alsacienne de houblon.
En parallèle un travail à la structuration de la filière au niveau national a été amorcé avec les producteurs traditionnels alsaciens. Une Interprofession a été créée en février 2020, Interhoublon, où la filière de Nouvelle Aquitaine, Houblons de Terroir, est adhérente. Nous avons organisé le premier Congrès National du Houblon au lycée agricole de Sainte-Livrade en octobre 2020, qui a rassemblé l’ensemble des houblonniers français et acteurs de la filière.
“The first producers were supported at the end of 2019, with a larger establishment of plots at the end of 2020, for a total of five producers. Five new producers also planted hops in 2021. Following this project, HOPEN will be in 2023, in volume terms, the third French supplier of hops. This monitoring began with the Chamber of Agriculture of Lot-et-Garonne, and continued with HOPEN (Creation of technical sheets, a cultivation reference, a cultural notebook… thanks to the training of a hops technician ), from 2020. This significant and continuous growth over time in the number of farmers monitored strengthens the technical and economic control of production and the sector by Hopen, but also the Chamber of Agriculture, allowing them to refine their data day by day, references and support. This is also reflected in the training provided by AgroCampus47. The support ecosystem thus gains experience and precision as the projects progress.
Les premiers producteurs ont été accompagnés fin 2019, avec une mise en place plus importante des parcelles fin 2020, pour un total de cinq producteurs. Cinq nouveaux producteurs ont également planté du houblon en 2021.
Suite à ce projet, HOPEN sera en 2023, en volume, le troisième fournisseur français de houblon.
Ce suivi a débuté avec la Chambre d’Agriculture du Lot-et-Garonne, et a continué avec HOPEN (Création de fiches techniques, d’un référentiel de culture, d’un cahier cultural… grâce à la formation d’un technicien houblon), à partir de 2020.
Cette croissance significative et continue dans le temps du nombre d’agriculteurs suivis renforce la maîtrise technique et économique de la production et de la filière par Hopen, mais également la Chambre d’Agriculture, leur permettant d’affiner de jour en jour leurs données, référentiels et accompagnements. Cela se traduit également dans les formations dispensées par AgroCampus47. L’écosystème d’accompagnement gagne ainsi en expérience et en précision au fil de l’avancée des projets.
