Lavender cultivation in Upper Lusatia

Objectives
Due to the natural site conditions in Upper Lusatia, the economic cultivation of traditional arable crops is not possible in the long term. Therefore, the cultivation of perennial lavender plants should diversify the crop rotation and open up new income opportunities for the farm in terms of risk minimization.
Objectives
Aufgrund der natürlichen Standortbedingungen in der Oberlausitz ist ein wirtschaftlicher Anbau klassischer Ackerfrüchte langfristig nicht möglich. Daher sollte der Anbau mehrjähriger Lavendelpflanzen die Fruchtfolge diversifizieren und im Sinne der Risikominimierung neue Einkommensmöglichkeiten für den Betrieb eröffnen.
Activities
Various varieties and cultivation methods were tested in the project and the production of regional products such as lavender oil, honey, scented sachets and cosmetics was trialed. The use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides was avoided. As a result, the drought-tolerant lavender is suitable for the regional conditions of Upper Lusatia. Irrigation is only necessary in the first year of cultivation. In depressions where waterlogging occurs for long periods after rain showers, enormous crop losses can occur. In comparison to the flat culture, cultivation in ridge culture has proven to be superior for yield development.
Activities
In dem Projekt wurden verschiedene Sorten und Anbauverfahren getestet und die Herstellung regionaler Produkte wie Lavendelöl, -honig, Duftsäckchen und Kosmetika erprobt. Auf den Einsatz chemischer Dünge- und Pflanzenschutzmittel wurde verzichtet. Im Ergebnis ist der trockentolerante Lavendel für die regionalen Gegebenheiten der Oberlausitz geeignet. Lediglich im ersten Anbaujahr ist eine Bewässerung notwendig. In Senken, wo nach Regenschauern langanhaltend Staunässe auftritt, können enorme Ernteausfälle eintreten. Im Vergleich zur Ebenkultur hat sich der Anbau in Dammkultur für die Ertragsentwicklung als überlegen erwiesen.
