Context

Some members of this GO have already participated in the previous GO "Guidelines for the contrast of fusarium in white garlic from Piacenza" whose preliminary results have highlighted the central role assumed by the "seed" of garlic - and its necessary sanitization in the propagation and spread of fungal disease. Fusariosis, in fact, represents the most important biotic cause of disease in garlic crops in the field. The consequent productive and economic damage varies with the year, but is always particularly significant, in fact in the worst ones, it can even reach 50-60% of production in some crops.
In particular, the investigations carried out with the first GO have highlighted that the main cause of the spread of the pathogen is to be connected with the colonization of the "seed", in particular the Fusaria are established in the area of abscission of the bulb.

Objectives

The dry rot of garlic from Fusarium spp. It is a problem that leads to huge production losses, especially during storage. A previous project has highlighted the crucial importance of the semen in the problem, as it is commonly infected with an incidence close to 100% even in the absence of visible symptoms of the disease. The objective of this proposal was to intervene in the critical points detected in the seed production line, interventions that directly or indirectly also contribute to the health of the product destined for the fresh market.

Objectives

Activities

The project, aimed at obtaining healthy garlic seed-cloves in order to prevent dry rot, carried out 3 main actions aimed at:
i) improve the functioning of the shelling machines for the preparation of the seed;
ii) evaluate the effectiveness of low impact sanitizing methods of cloves such as: ozone, dry and humid heat, disinfectant products;
iii) develop and evaluate the effectiveness of innovative seed tanning treatments by means of film coating.
All from a perspective of sustainability as well as the effectiveness of the various interventions.

Activities

i) migliorare il funzionamento delle macchine spicchiatrici per la preparazione del seme;
ii) valutare l’efficacia di metodi di sanificazione dei bulbilli a basso impatto quali: ozono, calore secco ed umido, prodotti disinfettanti;
