Improvement to hazelnut cultivation techniques, by efficient use of irrigation water and mechanical pruning
Mejora de las técnicas de cultivo en el avellano, mediante un uso eficiente del agua de riego y poda mecánica.
Context
Two actions will be carried out in the hazelnut orchards of El Camp de Tarragona. First of all, irrigation strategies will be tested to obtain an accurate idea of hazelnut tree water requirements and the period when it should be applied to ensure efficient use of water. The second action involves mechanically pruning in both adult orchards, to rejuvenate the trees and allow more light into the orchard, and young trees, to shape them in a specific way.
Objectives
The main project goal is to improve cultivation techniques for hazelnut orchards in the Tarragona area, to improve production, reduce costs and make water savings, all with the aim of making orchards more competitive.
More specifically, the irrigation water needed for hazelnut trees will be determined and mechanical pruning will be applied to both adult and young trees, all with the intention of promoting more competitive orchards.
Finally, the results will be transferred to the sector, in different dissemination and transfer actions (dissemination articles, talks, field conferences, etc.)
Objectives
El objetivo principal del proyecto es mejorar las técnicas de conreo de las plantaciones de avellano en el área de Tarragona, para conseguir mejores producciones, reducción de los costes i un ahorro de agua. Todo para hacer las plantaciones más competitivas.
Por último, se transferirán al sector los resultados obtenidos, en diferentes acciones de difusión y transferencia (artículos de divulgación, charlas, jornadas de campo…).

This project consists of two different parts:
- Efficient use of irrigation water.
- Mechanical pruning
1. Irrigation strategy trial
This trial tests different irrigation strategies and quantities for self-rooted hazelnut trees of the ‘Negret - IRTA® -N-9’ variety, and trees grafted onto ‘Dundee’ rootstock.
Four situations are considered:
• Drip and surface irrigation, based on evapotranspiration (ETc) needs, varying quantities and application times
• Underground irrigation, according to ETc needs and soil moisture probes.

1. Ensayo de estrategias de riego
En este ensayo de consideran diferentes estrategias y dosis de riego, en avellano autoarrelado de la variedad “Negret - IRTA® -N-9” e injertado sobre el pie “Dundee.
Se consideran 4 situaciones:
• Riego por goteo y superficie, según necesidades evapotranspirativas (ETc) en diferentes aportaciones y épocas del año.
• Riego subterráneo, según necesidades evapotranspirativas (ETc) i sondes de humedad en el suelo
2. Ensayo de poda mecánica
Se consideraran dos momentos de implantación de la poda mecánica:
