Objectives
Hungary has a long tradition of growing medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs), and the sector has played a significant role for most of the last century in domestic crop production. Unfortunately, the sector’s weight has decreased recently, and now cultivation area stabilized at around 20,000 ha. One of the reasons for the negative trend was the lack of an adequate basis for genetic resources. Hungary continues to offer excellent conditions for growing a wide range of MAPs. Knowing this, the members of the consortium set out to develop the
improvement of the genetic basist.
Objectives
A gyógy- és fűszernövények termelésének hagyománya van, és az elmúlt évszázad nagy részében jelentős helyet foglalt el a hazai növénytermesztés struktúrájában. Az állami szerepvállalás megszűnésével és tőkeerős, innovatív magáncégek jelenléte nélkül a nemesítés és a fajtafenntartás lényegében megszűnt. Mindazonáltal, Magyarország adottságai továbbra is kitűnőek sokféle gyógy- és fűszernövény termesztésére. Ezt felismerve, a konzorcium tagjai célul tűzték ki a termesztés genetikai alapjainak javítását.

1 Practice Abstracts
The members of the operating group (OG) have been facing the lack of appropriate propagating materials for decades. Moreover, in the case of organic farming, the problem is even more serious. Problems include a lack of information on the suitability of existing varieties, the
general lack of low-input varieties bred for organic farming, and it is practically impossible to obtain seeds with organic certification in Hungary - despite the fact that the EU regulation requires the use of them. n Hungary, the propagating material for the cultivation of MAPs is supplied by the buyer, due to the specific needs of most of the customers, which is quite unfavourable for the growers. These disadvantages are even stronger for the organic production, which are as follows: Almost all varieties supplied by the customer are imported from abroad, being produced under different ecological conditions that are in most cases significantly different from the domestic environment. This issue is particularly acute in ecological production where conventional risk-reducing inputs, e.g. fertilisers, and pesticides, are not allowed. The lack of high quality propagating material weakens the position of the farmer. At the moment, in Hungary, the problem of maintenance and propagation of existing MAP varieties is not solved; therefore, they are hardly available for cultivation.
Az operatív csoport tagjai a magyar gyógy- és fűszernövény termesztésben végzett több évtizedes tevékenységük során szembesültek a megfelelő szaporítóanyag hiányával. Az ökológiai gazdálkodás esetében ráadásul ez a probléma hatványozottan jelentkezik. Gondot jelent az információhiány a meglévő fajták alkalmasságáról, a speciálisan ökológiai gazdálkodásra nemesített „low-input „fajták hiánya, valamint az, hogy ökológiai tanúsítvánnyal rendelkező vetőmaghoz gyakorlatilag lehetetlen Magyarországon hozzájutni – annak ellenére, hogy az uniós rendelet ennek használatát elvileg kötelezővé teszi. Magyarországon a gyógy- és fűszernövények termesztése - a szabadpiacra történő termelés bizonytalansága, valamint a speciális vevői igények miatt - jelentős részben a megrendelő által biztosított szaporítóanyag felhasználásával történik, ami több szempontból is hátrányos a termelők számára. A szaporítóanyag-ellátottság területén jelentkező hiányosságok megszüntetését a megfelelő genetikai alapok felkutatásával és azonosításával szükséges elkezdeni. Ezt részben a tagok saját szaktudása és tapasztalata, részben a megfelelő kompetenciákkal rendelkező külső szakember bevonása teszi lehetővé. A termelők igényei és alapos piackutatás eredménye alapján kiválasztott, piaci potenciállal rendelkező fajok, hazánkban és más országokban elérhető és a szakirodalmi adatok alapján megfelelőnek ígérkező fajtáit hároméves termesztési kísérletben hasonlítjuk össze.
