Objectives

As a result of the phasing out of the use of deep sensitive groundwater for drinking water in livestock farming, the use of alternative water sources has increased significantly. Experience shows that the bacteriological quality of these alternative water sources can vary widely, requiring treatment of drinking water. However, there are many questions about the effect of drinking water disinfection treatments on rumen functioning in cattle. This OG will investigate animal health and productivity in relation to drinking water quality.

Objectives

Als gevolg van de afbouw van het gebruik van diep, kwetsbaar grondwater voor het gebruik van drinkwater in de veehouderij is het gebruik van alternatieve waterbronnen sterk toegenomen. Ervaring leert dat de bacteriologische kwaliteit van deze waterbronnen sterk kan variëren waardoor behandeling van drinkwater zich opdringt. Toch zijn er heel wat vragen over het effect van drinkwaterontsmetting op de werking van de pens bij rundvee. Deze OG zal de diergezondheid en productiviteit in relatie tot de drinkwaterkwaliteit onderzoeken.

Activities

This OG will focus on the collection of available knowledge on the disinfection of drinking water for cattle on the one hand and the testing of the effect of different disinfection products and doses on the rumen flora in vitro as well as on the rumen functioning in vivo, productivity and health of dairy cattle on the other hand. Based on the knowledge and experience, we will draw up practical guidelines for the use of drinking water disinfection in ruminants.

Activities

Deze OG zal inzetten op het verzamelen van de beschikbare kennis rond ontsmetting van drinkwater voor rundvee enerzijds en het uittesten van het effect van verschillende ontsmettingsproducten en dosissen zowel op de pensflora in vitro als op de op penswerking, productiviteit en gezondheid van melkvee in vivo anderzijds. Gebaseerd op de kennis en ervaringen, zullen we praktische richtlijnen opstellen voor gebruik van drinkwaterontsmetting bij herkauwers.
